Yes, lots of cobs/welshy/NF types, quite a lot of tinkers and the knacker man, however don't let this put anyone off, lots of lovely ponies need lovely homes, bargains to be had too.
We bought one of our best little ponies from there many years ago...was a 2yr old ridden round with a bit of rope through its mouth

yeah it does there some horrible sights but some one down my yard bought one for £800 and 1 year later sold it for £4500 who knew it already knew dressage etc

Does not suprise me, agree you can pick up some nice horses but I have avoid going, I only like picking up the waifs and strafes that nobody else wants, that i feel sorry for, I'd end up with a fields full, one for the geriatrics, another full off ugly hairy cobblets and another field full of the large dangerous horses that you wouldn't for the life of you stick a saddle on lol!

I'm known to my OH as the dead horse and donkey buyer

so I'm banned unless I leave my mobile and my purse at home

Hi Yes there is a sale every saturday, the tack auction starts at 10.30am and the horses are supposed to start at 12.30pm,but depending on how much tack is to be auctioned it can be later, they sell the tack and horses in the same ring.
I go most weeks but dont stop to see the horses go through so cant really help on the auction prices. Go with an open mind ,yes some of the sights are not nice but you can pick up some really nice horses there, ive had 2 ,one which ive had for 11yrs and wouldnt swap for love nor money, and i bought a 14mnth old colt about 3 weeks ago who is also turning out to be really nice.
This is beau the colt i bought.

I've been told that not many members of the 'public' go there anymore and most horses are bought and sold by the

Wash your hands and disinfect your boots after if you do go. I went looking for my stolen saddle. There was a tiny foal in a pen, obviously been removed from its mum that day or the day before. It was full of snot and virus. Poor little chicken. Those of us who live in caravans have most definitely taken it over. They bring wagon loads of cob types straight off the moors (dew and brambles still attached) and gallop everything about in the "carpark". I can't believe it is still allowed to go on to be honest. A council official strongly advised me not to go alone as he thought it was too dangerous and the police won't touch it with a bargepole.

The thing I notice is the smell, the smell of un healthy sick, worm ridden horses, you can't mistake it, it actually makes me feel sick, brings back memories of Pannel Horse Sales, now that was bad, the thing that bugs me is they have the cheek to charge you to walk round!

ends up cost me a fiver for a small bag of carrots lol

Yes it runs every week and I'm told that the highest price a few weeks ago was less than £800 but as every-one else says you could end up with loads of youngsters (or oldies) that you felt sorry for.

By the way, when did Holmfirth move over the border?

thanks guys.

sorry it took me so long to get back to you all.

i too bought one of my best horses from there, although he was an oldie and an absolute twit, he was marvelous when ridden.

i haven't been for over 4 years now.

im in the frame of mind for something big and quirky these days but without having to pay totally ridiculous prices for a project.

i will let you all know how i get on, and you all have my permission to flog me if i bring home anything smaller than 15hh,or under 3....
