Hi, Are they on tomorrow and are they a safe place? Just I read a few old posts and not too sure how safe they are? Also how many horses could I expect to see there? many thanks

Also does anyone know of any other horse sales around yorkshire?

York sales (York livestock centre) have a better reputation round here though I haven't been for years & I've never been holmfirth!

Yes they are on every Saturday, tack at 12, horses at 1.00pm. Not sure what you mean by safe. The horses are unwarranted but I know people who have bought from there and ended up with lovely horses, after a bit of work. If you mean your personal safety on the day, yes, you'll be fine, so long as you don't go round picking fights with people. If you do see a problem, report it to the market manager, rather than having a go at the vendor - we've done that in the past. I would take someone with you, just because most people there, both buyers and sellers go often and all know each other for the most part. You would probably feel more comfortable with a friend to talk to.
As for how many horses, I've only been a few times this year at not in the last couple of months but I would expect quite a few - probably upwards of 30 at this time of the year, some will be sold outside the ring though.

Agree with pearlsasinger about the place but the last few times we have been there has hardly been anything and most of those that were there were in poor condition. There is a huge tack auction beforehand though.

i like holmfirth sales, some nice horses do go through (some not so nice but...) it is alot smaller than york sales and normally there is only about 10-15 horses (max) that go through at holmfirth, but remember it is on every week... usually it is where alot of dealers go to buy there stock ect although you do get a few normal buyers looking for something, it usually has a couple of sale stands in the car park (like york does)

i have never had any problems with holmfirth sales and i used to go every other week.

thing is as with all sales... if you dont like it, then you dont have to go again. xx

To be fair, my experience was a few years back when I went looking for my stolen saddle, but when I rang the local council for directions etc they strongly advised me to not attend on my own as they felt I wouldn't be safe! There were one or two nice animals there, but several crammed to a pen (fighting), and one poor little foal which had probably been weaned that day and was very sick with a virus. The sellers were all travellers, hammering the ponies around the car park and there was no vet in attendance which I didn't think was legal, but there we go. No sign of my saddle but I saw another which I'd swear was stolen - it still had a greasy and hairy numnah and girth attached. I've never been back and wouldn't either. It left a foul taste in my mouth to be honest.

mmm......the last time we went was to buy back some of our stuff that had been stolen from the car a few days earlier (they took the car too and wrote it off). It made me a bit sick paying over the odds for our own cr*p but it was our cr*p and we wanted it back! We got our hanovarian superstar from there a few years ago at a very good price. Many of the horses sold through Holmfirth appear at York the following sale.

I have been twice in the last month and I must say I think things have improved some what, no where near perfect but a definate improvement from 10 years ago. The last couple of times I have been there has been about 20 horses for sale, most of the time the better ones are sold outside the ring. You will be perfectly safe as long as you don't pick fights with anyone as another poster mentioned. When i went last week i saw a beautiful 15.2 chestnut 2 year old but he never came through the ring so if u see something you like approach the owner before the sale starts. Let us know how you get on. X

My pony came from there (if you look through my old posts there's tons of pictures)
She was in a very sorry state and much to my suprise she popped out a cracking little foal 3weeks ago and needless to say shes now a great pony, but, it isn't exactly a 'nice' auction compared with york, the sellers seem to run it themselves...
