has anyone ever bought a family riding horse from holmfirth i bought my cob there in july and shes the best i would like another from there but dont want to push my luck and tempt fate

I went three weeks ago because it isn't far from me. To be honest the only things there were small neglected ponies, and a couple of very skinny looking old TBs. I have, in the past, seen some very good gypsy cobs there, my aunty went through a phase of buying horses from there because she felt sorry for them, two of them turned out fab and she god a mega 16.2hh allrounder. I think it is the luck of the draw. I never stick around for the auctioning, what kind of prices do they get up to?

You can't really go far wrong with the cobs if you know your stuff and see them ridden down the main road. I'd steer clear of any of the larger horses and TB's though, better off buying something ready for breaking, have you been lately? you'll be lucky to find something this time of the year, there very few horses going through at the moment, few small ponies and the odd brood mare, unless your local its hardly worth the trail, I think a lot of the dealers/tinkers are going with empty boxes to see what they can pick up, last time i went there were 4 neds...perhaps that was good thing though.

there was a lovely 15hhish gelding there other week that looked really nice but seemed a bit over the top showy wise that made me think there was something wrong he went for £650 my my cob was £800 i only saw her in harness b4 i bought her so was just luck i guess but shes worth her weight in gold my 4yr old rides her off the lead rein. im wanting a idx or something middleweight i just dont want to end up with a complete nutter

My friend bought a cob that had gone through Holmfirth sales. He was advertised as 3 but turned out to be just over 2 and had already been backed, ridden and driven.

At 4 both his hocks went with chronic arthritis and he had to be pts. The vet said it was too much too young.

So beware, even cobs can go wrong.
