They were really easy to make. Me and OH just decided to make them one day as we had loads of the plywood knocking around. We were going to use one sheet, but decided it wouldn't be robust enough so bolted two layers together. I was going to split a length of hosepipe and glue it over the top edge to smooth it off, but never got around to it! We used animal safe wood stain.
I was going to put two stips of 2x4" wood on each side to make a channel for the boards to run in, but found if you fit them snug enough you don't need them, just one on each side for it to rest against. The seeds do mostly drop out the bottom, but you need to reach down and brush the sides down sometimes as they can clog up.
Didn't make ours as big as the proper Haybars - my piglets would be HUGE if I fed them a bale every night, which is what the proper ones hold I think.
We've just had two more boxes built, so will be out making more corner thingies soon!

Hope this helps you all, I expect to see lots of pics of your ones springing up over the summer!

Brilliant, thanks!

We've got exterior ply and that will be plenty strong enough, nothing's managed to kick or bite a hole through the doors which are made of it anyway yet and they've been up 18 years so far!
I wondered what that screw was on the front of the bar, thought it might have had a retaining/strengthening bar behind it, but if the angles are right they can't push it further into the corner anyway, can they?
Promise I'll take some pic's - when they ever get done!

Only other question I need to ask is how high you have them, bearing in mind that some boxes will have mares and foals in and if they're too tall foals won't be able to reach to dip in, though if we put a base in that would higher the hay wouldn't it?

You're right, as long as it fits snugly the 'triangles' won't move anywhere.
The mare/foal thing is something I need to consider as one of our new boxes is our foaling box (

!) If you were to put a base in then it would need to be quite a way up inside the haybay, as the hay doesn't drop all the way to the bottom anyway.. I'd be tempted to put an upturned tub or something similar inside to make a base, as the seeds would still drain to a certain extent.
As for how high.... the one in my sig is being modelled by a 15.1.
GM - will take some measurements for you later

That is fab, I have just printed it off so I can have a go this weekend!! Will post piccies when done!

We have soooo much plywood of all different thickness around the yard - I'm talking about 30 big sheets worth, I could go into business!

LOL - we had big sheets lurking in the store room which I was completely fed up of seeing... getting rid of them was my sole motivation for making the hay bars in the first place!

Am in the process of finding a tape measure so I can toddle off and get the measurements.

Is it wrong that me and OH (both fairly DIY-novices!) went to the effort of making luxuries such as haybars when I haven't even got the basics yet?! e.g tie rings!

Yep, they can all reach the bottom, definitely nothing left in the morning in the haybars that belong to the greedy ones!

My biggest lad is 15.3, but you could always either put yours higher or scale the whole thing up to make it bigger all round... I imagine your big lad puts more away than mine do!

There was no rocket science used when deciding how high to put mine, I sort of just lined the top up with one of the rows of blockwork which looked about right and that was that!

Brilliant, thanks!

We always had DIY ones, but if you imagine half the height and twice as wide - you screwed about 18" of 1"x1" to the wall, from the floor up, but vertical not at an angle, and right down to the floor, then the board - about 18" high but about 6-8' - slotted in behind.

Was much lower and wider but served the same purpose.

I like the look of yours better though!

We have some board YO said we can have, the packaging off the wings for his flat pack plane (I kid you not, building his own airplane!!!) so I think I'll be making one!
