Home made jumps

Ok, so I'm looking into making my own jumps.

The link shows the fence I want to make. So have a few questions:
Are the measurements right for getting jump cups to fit?
Where is the cheapest place to buy wood? I was thinking B and Q or focus?
What should I do about poles, can I buy them cheap from somewhere?
Is it going to be cheaper then buying jumps ready made?

You would be better off going to a sawmills or timber merchant rather than B&Q and the likes! Is there a Buildbase near you? My OH is a landscaper and does a lot of fencing - he NEVER buys from B&Q as they are so expensive!

deffiantly saw mills.. for fillers then b and q.. there sheets of wood are around 20 quid, and you can get them cut to size on site.. you can get 2 larger fillers ie around 2 foot. or 4 smaller ones around 1 foot.. just keep in mind when u add the fee on it gives them more height.

B and Q and Focus be bu**ered, get down to your local sawmill (look in the yellow pages if you need to find one).
DIY seem to charge 3 or 4 times the cost of buying it direct from a sawmill, and its not even treated!
If you want wooden posts they wil probably set you back no more than £5 each if you get them at the same time!

sawmill for def, i've just managed to get some little 6ft poles treated, to use for trotting poles and skinny fences, for £5 each delivered. After payday will be going back to get some 10ft poles to make bigger jumps. OH is working on my first wing too

we'll see how that goes!!
Meanwhile still wanting some plastic blocks to make pretty spreads, but cant afford it!!!

No, I don't think they are. 4" square posts will be too wide for most jump cups. I'm planning on making some very similar to that in the near future, and have bought the jump cups first to make sure I use wood that will fit!

Sorry to rain on your parade but I doubt if those jump stands will last very long at all. The design is flawed. At a yard I moved to they had stands built similarly to those & they were all falling apart. Screws are not strong enough for that job, you need a design that can be bolted together with 10mm bolts.

You won't get jump cups to fit 4" x 4" timber uprights, you'd do better with 4" x 2" or similar. I designed some jump stands & built them with reclaimed timber joists. Reclaimed timber is much cheaper than new timber. If you need to buy new then go to a timber yard/saw mill. B&Q etc are extremely expensive & you will also be lucky to buy any wood there that isn't warped.

You can buy poles from farm suppliers, fencing companies etc.

If you have a reasonably diy knowledge they can be made easily. If you are not very hands on, & don't have the necessary tools then sort out a diy person/carpenter to build them for you.
