Pallet -- the type with slats on both sides. Cut in half, then bolt on a piece of 25mm x 75mm on the thicker piece of wood at one end to make 'foot'. One pallet makes two small jumps or one large one and you can stick branches etc. in the top. Simple! If anyone is interested, I'll try and take a photo tomorrow.
I made (well actually my dad did) a tiger trap. Three pieces of wood either end and you had to do angles on them, then two screws at each corner to hold it together. Then a couple of planks screwed on between the two triangles either end, it is actually very good. I hope this makes some sense, I haven't got any pictures annoyingly.
I find beer barrels invaluable but have made a real show jump. It's mini sized as I made it from wood I already had so top hole is 90cm. It was actually pretty simple to make but the one thing you'll need is a good wood drill bit, a long one. I have plastic jump cups but one is cracked after just 18 months so I'll go metal next time. I also made a "water tray" out of some radon membrane and wood off cuts to keep it in place. And some fillers out of a rotten gate and a pallet. I just cut out the good bit and screwed feet to each end. No pics of these though.
Jump freshly made, not yet painted
Painted and set to 80cm
Not really a home made jump, but a really useful tool for learning.
I saw a brilliant homemade filler last week, someone had got all their old wellies and stuck them upside down on wooden posts, so that the soles of the boots made a continuous line at the top of the jump, then they had a pole over the top. I'm going to make one for myself as we have a lot of leaky wellies hanging about waiting for a new job.
I made this filler in summer. It's an old pallet sawn in half, with feet attached on the bottom, and a little plank fastened across the back to hold the bits of plastic Christmas tree for 'brush'.
all of my jumps are handmade/homemade but not all by me as a few I have bought from someone who made them for their yard
I made the white jumps and one of the rustic jumps in these pics, I have zero woodworking skills
I need some different jumps now and I have the wood and plans ready to make London bridge and a fish pond complete with rubber ducks. I have enough wood for about six more jumps and that and the seven jumps in this picture will have cost me less than £300 in total
I've had an idea of a jump but need some advice on whether people would think it was safe or completely ridiculous.
It would be a pallet at an angle, with two flat pieces of wood as stands going out the back, fastened on with door hinges so that it could all easily be folded up to store.
Would this be dangerous because it wouldn't necessarily fall down if you hit it?
