Home made mane and tail conditioner/detangler?

Is there such a thing??? The proper ones at £7 a bottle are becoming rather expensive, and the different brands dont always work...

I buy it in bulk and then its much cheaper. I like the absobene (sp) one as it doesn't have alcohol in it like canter which can make the hair brittle.

I've been told to use furniture polish - I'm giving it a go tomorrow.

I normally use a kiddies' hair detangler from the supermarket though!

I second the furniture polish, it detangles a treat and leaves the tail all shiny and soft.

Though it is not cheap, you only need a very small amount, I can recommend survivor detangler from Equss. I have a gypsy cob and it works every time on his very long and thick tail. It is also a leave in conditioner with no silicon etc to damage the hair.

Alternatively do as I do, keep it in a tailbag over winter and in the summer, I put two thirds of it into the bag and leave the top third layer out as a swisher - this is still more tail than most TBs left out.

You can use pig oil/baby oil as a detangler - cheap and very effective.

Think twice about using furniture polish if you intend to use it regularly - lots of nasty chemicals and after a while the hair looks dry and brittle. Ok for the odd show as long as you rinse the tail out afterwards.

mr sheen type stuff but look for sillicone in the ingrediants,wd40, or baby oil in a plant sprayer mixed with water is good.

i use baby oil mixed with water (about half and half) in an old spray bottle.

I know someone who used to wash her horses tails with fabric softener

I use Furniture polish!

My mare has a very thick tale which twizzles itself into the early stages of dredlocks, good old cheapo polish works a treat!!

my friend has an irish cob with a huuuuge tail, and she uses baby oil.
