home study / correspondence courses....does any have any advice?

Apologies if this post is in the wrong area...new to this site.
I am currently a teaching assistant, aged 40 and looking for a home study or correspondence course in equine studies.
I have looked on the net and there are so many with so many different 'qualifications' - has anyone any experience of this type of learning? Which is a good one with a recognised qualifaction? Can anyone please help?

time fairly limited - work till 12 each day so afternoons free and/or evenings when kids in bed (hence home study, easier for me, however could attend a college one eve per week?)
£ not thousands but whatever it takes
last studied...i'm 40 now so apart from odd work related courses many moons ago since i left school and college!
enquired about recognised as don't want to waste my time and £ on a qualification from joe bloggs, something recognised if i should want to change career at this very late stage!

Ok. Have you looked at TOCES www.equinestudies.co.uk ?

Not sure where you are based but they do 100% distance learning & have some really good courses, from short introductory ones to degree level & vet nursing. I'm a student with them atm doing a BSc in Equine science

I have to say the standard of tuition & the course material is very good. (& I have two other degrees I can compare it to) but it is very hard work & is taking me ages because I don't have much time to study.

My sister is doing one of their short courses & she is really enjoying it.

The study weeks are excellent too.

Alternatively if you are based near a college, perhaps you could do a course there? It IS quite hard doing 100% distance learning & can often help if you have others around you! Depends on how you want to do it though.

finding out about stonebridge college, open college of equine studies and lingfield...if anyone has experience (good or bad) please let me know or info on any other courses.
maybe at 40 too old to consider a career change though i don't feel any different to when i was 20!.
 
Maybe post this in the Careers forum as well?

My first question would be what types of horse-related jobs you are looking to be qualified for, because the best study route could be quite different.

And 40 is not too old for a career change! Good luck!
 
I have completed a course with lingfield and they are very good, have also completed courses with a few others, cant remember their names now as certs all stuffed away.
I love home study courses but you do really have to discipline yourself, or you will keep putting it off till tomorow and as we all know tomorrow never comes
