Homemade XC Jumps

New YM is wanting a course of XC jumps. My OH is a joiner. So just playing with the thought of making our own as it should be cost effective, right? We will only want teeny tiny ones, as we haven't got a yard of event horses! :o We will only want 5 or 6 but will want variety within that. I have little XC experience so not sure what we can make that will be suitable for everyone and a lot of fun aswell.

Have any of you made your own XC jumps? What have you got? And how easy were they to make? (Obviously we have an advantage with a skilled tradesman at our disposal ;))

A man at my yard made some lovely ones, & he's a pilot!!

A couple of narrow tiger traps-one stands at 3', the other 2'6 with a top pole on. Take the top pole off and they're 3" shorter :) Also have a small tabletop and a arrowhead. He reckons they were quite straight forward, and they're like enough to move around :)
 
Cant help on design, but just be careful that if they aren't securely fixed into the ground they can be very dangerous. There was a post on here sometime ago about the dangers of mobile x-country fences that you might like to read. It recommended the best way to secure them down. Wish we had some little ones though so slightly jealous :)
 
Logs are always good and a nice and simple introduction for the horse...maybe you could use tyres in one of the fences, not sure how you'd secure them though...

We had a ditch-phobic pony, quite a few actually (maybe it was the rider :rolleyes:) so we dug a hole in the ground, I was young and can't remember dimentions, but at the time we were building our arena, so used kick boards in it :) they were about 18" high :) hope that helps :) Ditches are very good to have at home, a lot of horse don't like them, and you can put a knock down show jump over them to make a trakhener :D two jumps for the price of one! :D
 
We have been gradually adding jumps in our wood, there were quite a few fallen trees which are now log jumps, there's a ditch but it's a slightly odd angle to jump where it is so OH will dig it out on a better angle. Next one to be built is where there is an old what looks like was once a muck heap pile from about 20 years ago - essentially a mound. OH has some old scaffold boards (10 for £20 from a scaffold company - they get rid of damaged ones) and will be making steps up and a bank down.
