Hi,

Possibly thinking about swapping my little car and 3.5ton box for a bigger car and trailer. Does anyone use a Honda CRV for towing? How is the reliability?

I know they can tow up to 2ton, so only really enough for one horse, but my 3.5 ton is only one horse really so not loosing out there.

Whats the MPG like towing and not towing? I also have a 30 mile round trip to work to factor in :).

I have my B + E so no restrictions there!

Thank you,

Lauren

Check the exact model, some tow more than others. Honda are generally great for reliability. My dad used to have one (not for towing) and the MPG was pretty good for general running around.

Thanks :D, yep the ones I'm looking at can tow 2 ton. That's great, I need a reliable car for work and obviously towing x

Following with interest as I'm doing exactly the same. My 3.5t is advertised will replace it with a trailer to be towed using my Dad's CRV. He doesn't use it for towing but does a 100mile round trip for his current work contract and apparently it's really good on fuel but I couldn't tell you exacts sorry

We're on our 2nd CRV, we ran the first one for 6 years with no problems, had current one 2+ years again so far no problems. Ours is 2.2 diesel, tow weight 2000kgs, we have an Ifor 505 and cob is under 500kg and it tows fine. Have occasionally towed with cob and shetland and didn't notice any difference. A friend recently bought one and tows her 650kg horse with it and was very happy with it. We get around 44mpg doing a mix of short and medium journeys.

We've been fine getting of slightly muddy fields with it and I use it to take fencing and batteries down the field and so far haven't got stuck but it's 4x4 isn't in the same league as Land Rovers and other similar.

Thank you that’s really helpful, I’m happy to only have the capacity to tow one big horse as that’s all I’ve got now with my box.

44mpg is pretty good!

What sort of age and mileage have you had? Are the older ones still pretty reliable?

I have a 56 plate, wanted the newest of the old model as it has the squarer boot shape for the dog. Also has a flip up rear window in the back door which again is handy for dog. I've only towed a few times lightweight trailer with small pony so about 1200kg, it was fine but the clutch isn't up to it anymore (think it was used for caravan before I had it). Replacement clutch is about 800 but I don't need to tow so haven't bothered. Pretty sure my mpg is about 45 too, had it 4yrs 92k miles now only issue i can remember is it needed a new distributor.

I have the same one... I tow my 401 with my approx 570kg horse in it no problem . The average MPG is currently showing 41.5. Hope that helps .

First one was 08 plate bought with 50,000 miles on, sold with 75,000 I think, second one was 2013 bought with 35,000 miles on it. From memory the model before 07 had a lighter towing weight, the automatics have a lighter towing weight and the new 1.6 petrol ones still have a 2,000kg tow weight but I would still check any model specifically. No garage I've been to has ever known the towing weight.

Our current one has a reversing camera that is so accurate I can hitch up on my own very easily, and much better than listening to OH's left a bit, right a bit STOPPPP!

I have a 2008 petrol 2l...Never used for towing. It has all wheel drive but I was disappointed at the mph..most has been 26.8 mpg!
