Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum and looking for some new car advice.

I'm considering in a new manual diesel Honda CRV for general towing of my trailer with one horse and other general 4x4 duties.

Does anyone have any experiences with the new CRV, I am aware that the older models were not so good but the new ones now have a breaked weight of 2000kg.

I currently drive a ML and have previously owned a Freelander, both of these were excellent.

Thanks in advance :)

I have one but don't tow with it so not sure I can be that helpful but I do like the car and touch wood no problems so far with it!

I dont tow personally as I havent been driving long enough.

My partner has been driving for 15 years so he has the full licence.
15 years - must be close on beating the 01/01/1997 deadline for the free B+E

I know this is taking you off topic a little but .....

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

Thank you :D

So regarding your post above does that mean that I can tow with L plates and my partner supervising?

I must admit i dont think i'm brave enough and would much rather leave him to it.

Thank you for the information though. We are test driving one for a cuople of hours at the weekend to get a better feel for it.

I would recommend a Nissan X trail over a CR-V if you will be doing quite a bit of towing where you have to go off the tarmac eg at venues, they are similar but all the reviews I have ever seen have suggested that the X trail is a better balance between on-road and off road abilities whereas the CRV is OK off road but def more of an on road slant to its abilities.

However, that might suit you if the towing is not involving muddy fields or other challenges, so either is worth considering.

CRVs are also I think more often petrol than diesel, whereas X trails are normally diesel, diesel usually better for towing.

manual better than auto too and again, altho you can get both cars in manual and auto, CRvs are more often auto (Im thinking secondhand availability here, if you buy new of course you can get whatever you want as spec!)

hope this helps....

My Dad has the CRV we towed with it on quite long journey's and it was fine, didn't have any issues on muddy show grounds either.

Although we only ever towed with one in the trailer.
