do you visit your horse in a day when they're:

a) on diy livery

b) living out

c) on full livery

I know this is going to be a contentious thread and will make a cup of tea while waiting for the 1st replies to hit but I am genuinely interested as I am moving my boy from diy (owners on site) to living out (owners on site).

I would create a poll if I knew how.....next time maybe :)

a) twice

b) twice

c) only had a horse on full livery when I was injured and could barely walk let alone ride. She was an hour away and I went once a week.

When ours were on DIY with the owners living on site, at least one family member visited twice a day. We knew that the YO also went round all the fields at least once a day and did a last round about 10pm when they were in, in winter.
Now that they are at home, we see them every time we go outside. If your YO lives close enough to the fields, this will also be the case.

When I was on DIY I arranged witha friend that she would do mornings and me evenings, without that arrangement I would go twice.

When I had one out I went 1x a day but others would do visual checks in the morning.

Full Liv as I am now I go up once a day :)

MOSTLY twice when stabled overnight (but other owners and I take in turns to bring in/turn out so may do 4 days twice daily and 3 days once daily).

When living out 24/7, once a day.

I have rented stables, so effectively diy, im lucky the stables are close to my house, so i go down usually about 3-4 times or more a day, as its only 3 mins from the house, sometimes i just have a wee drive by the field to see how they are if im out and about as its only a detour of a minute or so.
1. To check over and put out in the morning.
2. Go back down after my brekkie to muck out
3. To check over and bring in at night.
Usually do a late night check in my jammies about 9.30

Twice, twice and I'm on full livery now but usually go up 6 days a week minimum unless I'm ill or on holiday. Having said that I go up all those times now because I want to see them, not because I need to check up on anything, and whilst that might sound funny I know a lot of people who feel it's necessary to check to make sure their horses are well looked after on full livery. I'm very lucky that I don't need to!

Can I ask why you're asking? ;)

1) twice
2) once but YO also did a check twice a day at least
3) twice a week when turned away for break
daily where possible when in work

a) Twice, unless I stayed all day

b) Never

c) Never

To explain it a bit better, I've never had horses on grass livery. Now I have my own yard which I live at, I'm there all day to oversee everything. I've never kept anything on full livery either.

A) once daily even if I'm dying, though if I am horse will be thrown out in the field and have to take pot luck over the next few days.
B) once daily unless I'm seriously ill.
C) once daily unless I'm ill, working, busy with something else.

My current yard doesn't do full livery. Generally I wish I didn't get ill and could be a better horse owner.

Honestly?

I bring the mares and foals in daily for feeding. Then once a day I'll go through the paddocks - so hands on at least twice.

I hay twice a day at the moment so the boys get checked properly twice.

But I can see every paddock from my house, so I see them all the time, and the stallions are very good at telling me where the others are and if there is anything wrong - I have learned what their calls mean.

As I also have liveries on full pasture board - which means I am responsible for their day to day maintenance, so liveries get seen regularly too, many more times than twice.

My family see them too when they are bimbling about and report anything out of the ordinary, as do livery owners when they are here. Then, as two sides of the property are by the roads it isn't unusual for passers by to tell me what they are up to as well, last week someone went by and noticed a foal down, still down an hour later and he came to tell me, turned out it was George, and George sleeps like the dead even when the others have moved on, but if he had been ill then it is good to know that people watch them. Poor horses, they are constantly being watched.

Grass DIY livery

I used to only visit her once a day when she was in a herd and we shared visiting between all the horses owners. Recently she's been in her own paddock so i've been going up twice a day. She's now back in the herd but I will still be going up twice a day.

a) once - but I guess technically it was assisted DIY as there was a guy there all the time who put them out and checked them.
B) once - but it was only a short period many years ago and we all kept an eye n each other's horses
c) I go up 6 days a week as I work late one day and she also has the day off that day.

love your new signature ! Glad your on the mendx

1) - DIY - twice
2) turned out - twice
3) Full livery - did this when we moved to a new area, and had limited time, only went at the weekend. This only lasted a few months, and really had no other choice.
4)Have my own place now so see them all the time

Always twice a day whether in and DIY or living out.

Never had a horse on full loan. I was considering it and the idea was to give me two days in the week where contact with Fatty wasn't necessary.

DIY - In summer while pony was living out - once daily.
- In winter while pony in at night/out during the day - twice daily but often shared duties with other liveries...1 person did mornings/1 person did evenings.

Grass - once daily.

Full - I've never kept anything on full livery.

To add - everywhere I have kept mine, past or present, there are always people around so there is constant supervision even when I'm not at the yard.

Current pony lives out 24/7 (100 acre field). I don't have a car so walk (1.9 miles each way) to and from the yard. When at the yard, I'm there for several hours plus I walk through my pony's field both while going to the yard and when going home. YO lives on site.
