Honestly dont know what to do :S

Yesterday when i bought my pony in from the field his coat seemed dull, i groomed all the dust off him but it still seemed dull. So i kept him in last night. This morning his coat still seemed the same, and his eyes didnt seem to be as bright. He is still eating perfectly normaly, drinking normaly, his poo is normal, theres nothing else wrong with him except for his dull coat :S. At the moment i am unsure whether it is because the field that he is in has gone from having nice, nutritional grass to there practically being nothing in there and he isnt getting the nutrients that he was or whether its because of a new supplement that we have put him on from global herbs, scar-ex. We werent sure wether he might be suffering from a side affect. Everything else is completely normal with him, he is still behaving the same and there are no other changes. Any ideas what would be the best thing to do ?
 
TTT - the hairs that you see on your ponio are dead and new growth tends to happen mostly when his summer or winter coats start to grow. So any changes you make to your ponio's diet in order to bring back a shine to the coat won't show until new hair grows. An increase in the natural oils in his coat is unlikely to make a noticeable difference for ages. Have you tried giving him a bath in a shampoo that "brings out the shine" and when he's dry groom him and groom him until your arm is dropping off. Are you sure he hasn't still got any of his winter coat remaining and is taking a long time to properly shed it? Is he losing weight? Did you mean he's on sarc-ex for sarcoids? I'd read the tub carefully to check if they warn of any side effects. I doubt it will be that if you are feeding in the right quantities. It's more likely that he's short of adequate nutrition. Have you kept him on a bare field deliberately eg laminitis risk? If not, I'd move him to a new field with lots of Dr Green. Dr Green always works miracles unless your ponio is having sarc-ex for a reason and he is eg elderly or has big problems with sarcoids that could be affecting his digestive system in some way. If you're still worried, why not get the vet out for a check up?
 
He has had his summer coat for a while now, and it really was looking good. The field is just bare because there are so many ponies in there it just has no grass left. He is on the scar-ex for lumps that he has on his shoulders and saddle area. The think is that the vet call out fee is double on weekends so it would be £140 so i need to be sure as to whether i need to get the vet out or not
 
I would take his temperature. If that is normal, then give him his wormer, if not, call the vet out. The eyes being less bright would concern me more than the coat. I may just be that the sun has bleached his hair.
 
Are his eyes lacking sparkle or have they changed colour in the surrounding hair???

As he is a grey he will constantly get lighter.

I cant imagine that as a grey he will have much of a shine anyway (unless he is very dark).

It could be just that he was cold yesterday..... the temps have dropped dramatically over the last few days.... his coat may have just fluffed up and be less shiney because of that.

Google ... staring coat and see what happens.

I wouldnt panic to call out the vet if he is bright enough in every other way

I have just noticed that you posted yesterday about your pony not excepting the bit suddenly and also that he has some kind of skin complaint. I would think that there is a strong possibility that the 3 are linked. Have you had the vet out to check the skin complaint. It may be rainscald, is it tiny little scabs? Mine had this last year, even though she never stands out in the rain. It is because she has a lowered immune system due to her old age.
If his behaviour under saddle has changed, coupled with the lacklustre coat, I would get the vet out to give him the once over. He may have a virus.
 
But the little scabs that he has always had seem to be getting a lot better than they were, thorough using the sacr-ex and wearing a fly sheet at night.
