I rent a little field from a farmer for my horses. It's only a couple of acres and a couple of stables, and it's just basic so I expected no facilities or anything like that. It's not on the mains either so I dohaven't had lighting up there. I've been making do with a head torch and a lantern in the feed room. Not too much of a problem as they're still out so no mucking out just yet. The farmer I rent from has been saying for a few months he'll install solar powered lighting, and we've been to-ing and fro-ing about what sort of light would be best - I confess I've not been terribly pro-active about looking into what's available, but we've talked about what sort of thing would be most useful.

Then last night, I only went up there and found he'd installed a big light outside my stable shining across into the field, new solar panel on one roof and signs of a light being fitted in my hay barn too :D I tested it out (it's fab) and went home very happy. Found an email this morning explaining the hay barn light would be fitted as soon as they had the right part, as would a light in one stable and that he was working on the other.

Honestly, I never expected him to go to such lengths! All I ever said would be useful was a light in the stables themselves, outside and haybarn would be lovely, but tbh I could deal even if I didn't have any. Ever since I've moved on, he's mentioned things like this and then they just appear! e.g. would automatic drinkers in the field be useful? yes, but for the price I don't expect them... two weeks later I have one in my field :D He never interferes or complains about things, just turns up with straw and things like this :D

Makes me feel guilty that I haven't done my field for a few days and I still haven't hung the internal gate (I've been meaning to do it for ages!). Must go do that now, actually ;)

Just thought I'd mention it, as a change from all the ranting about bad land owners / farmers / YOs (believe me I know some can be a pest, but some are just grand!) :) This may not sound like much to some, but it makes me insanely happy...!

From the title I thought it was going to be another rant!

What a great guy, sounds like he really does care about his customers! Anyway, the solar panels might benefit him, if they generate more power than they use then he might get reimbursements from the power company. Either way, that's fab. Lucky you, just in time for the clocks changing!

mines the same :) he has just made a new door for my 2 year old and had put new lights in the stables and highered the shelter as taz keeps hitting his head he has hug our rug racks and he has rolled my field all with out asking and he just potters about the yard doing his cows and never complains :)

What an ace guy, how nice of him to do those things and think about what will make life easier in the winter. Need more people like him!

Maybe so, but have you any idea how much they cost? My aunt has just spent £14k having them installed on her 3 bed semi!

Anyway, lovely to read a YO/farmer appreciation thread, they are few and far between and some need to remember that non-landowning horse owners would be totally stuck without them.

Ouch! Didn't realise they were so expensive- my OH's parents have them at their house and they are making money on them- although they have lived there for 10 years so maybe they put them there when they first started renovating..

Either way, great farmer!

He sounds fab. :) All our landlords bar one (who just leaves us to it which is equally great) are fab too, lovely when they are like that :)

Agreed...bottle of vino or whisky for Christmas!

Crikey OP don't ever move from there as you have the farmer from heaven!!!!!
Seriously you have found one that is very much against the norm. Well done him on all he has done for you, just wish others had the same view.
My own experience of farmers and yard owners is promises, promises and lastly promises but never EVER delivering on those.
Have got to the point now where I am just a little psd off about it to be honest and can't wait to get my own place. Then I will have the things I need because I will DO them myself. I am not even talking about luxuries either, it has been things like leaking stables, proper water containers, safe fencing and sufficient/suitable grazing.
OP your farmer is worth his weight in gold and sounds a really nice guy. I want to cry now with jealousy lol.

Right, I'm moving in!

Steady :D Whilst I'd love you to join me, if I had space for another, I would probably have bought more ponies by now! :D

As for the suggestions of wine or whiskey for Christmas, I think that's a great idea :D I shall definitely do that :)

Sorry Fantasy_World, didn't mean to make you jealous :( Sadly I will have to leave probably next summer for work reasons, which is a real shame as I've never been so happy at any yard. (may have just jinxed that!)

sheep, I don't see how he could sell the energy back as the field's an isolated circuit, not hooked up to the mains or anything. They're not big panels, just enough for the fence and the lights so I don't think they'd generate that much, but at the same time, I suspect they weren't cheap. The electrics look quite swish and complicated...! Either way, I'm very pleased!

marmalade76, I am one of those horseowners who would be screwed without him, so yes, exactly, I'm very appreciative! :)

I've got one a lot the same. All i wanted was a field and a shed. He has spent the summer building me amazing internal stables to my spec to make my life as simple as possible. He has bent over backwards to make sure my horses have the best grazing. On top of this he is in the middle of converting another sheep shed into an indoor school and is letting me take the pick from his youngsters to do what i like with. I am not moving!!

What brilliant guys you have all found (see, there are some out there!)

Nice bottle of something with a big bow on it for him?

I thought it was a rant too! Then I got bored of the other threads and opened this...

Delighted. What a top banana your farmer is! Is cloning affordable, legal and/or approved by NICE yet....?
