Sorry, I know there have been a few abcess threads but I'm after thoughts on mine.

Horse is barefoot but only 5 months into this and still pretty poor feet (ex racer 4yrs). He came in bit lame last Sunday, then was very lame on Monday night.

Tues Morning, hot poulticed and called vets to check if OK to still be turned out, advised to keep poulticing and turnout, give bit of bute.

Kept this up till Thurs, horse was more comfortable with bute and going out in day, hot poultice being re done each day. Spoke to vets who advised take off bute to see how bad

By Sat night horse was pretty lame again, Had trimmer out Sun morning. Now, I know where the abcess is, it's on the inside of the sole and that area is bit soft and palpable, she dug a bit out as I'd found what looked like a small hole (had hoped it would burst there) but it looks like it may be small puncture wound. The inside heel bulb is also slightly different colour so may have tracked up there. She advised have vet check as possible puncture, they may dig out a bit more and possibly give anti biotics and xray.

So, vet coming this afternoon, not my normal vet and I will be watching with a keen eye as I don't want a hole dug in his hoof.

Is it likely to burst at the heel? Should I let the vet dig out where the puncture is? I've stocked up on epsom salts so can start soaking if he'll let me. I'm very wary of taking too much of the hoof away as that will cause as many problems as it solves but he is very sore on it and I've kept him in today as he just couldn't make it to the field....

Thoughts???

I'd go with whatever the vet suggests to treat him. Your horse has been lame for a long time and, as you say, it may be a puncture which could be nasty.

Oh don't get me wrong I'll go on the advice of the vet, unless they want to start chopping his hoof off at which point I'll want xrays, and second opinion of my usual vet, plus would want trimmer involved.

Not too worried, he's only been lame a week and for half of that was comfortable on bute, he's quite perky in himself.

Just after opinions on where it may burst, how long should I keep waiting for it to burst etc I think I'd rather dig a little out see if it burst, then dig little more etc

I know from other threads they can go on for weeks...
