Having never had a lame pony or one with a small abcesses im in need of a few opinions on what you would do next?

My little mare went lame on thursday had the farrier out he treated it all and i have been poulticing etc each day since it was only small and no pus seems to have come out now and she isn't lame and the heat in her hoof has gone down but im unsure what to do next? Would it be ok to just clean it and use purple spray or use pine tar and bandage it up until the hole seals or would it be ok after a few days to just take the bandage off as she hates being in and my other pony is missing not being able to boss her round the field.

When my old mare had abceses i used to wash the foot off then syringe Iodine into the hole and bung it up with cotton wool so no dirt gets in there.then leave her out to as she stressed being inside.I used to do this everyday for a week.Always seemed to work for me.

I would dry poultice, cover with a nappy or similar, vetwrap and cover with duck tape and turn her out if your fields are relatively dry (ours certainly aren't!) and if you think she won't hooley round

We usually poultice for at least a week as foot will still be sore, then get the shoe back on if you think the abscess has cleared. Good luck

If there is no pus coming out now, just pour a little hydrogen peroxide in the hole daily, leave open and turn out. Don't go proding anything into the hole as you risk pushing infection in. After about a week you can just forget it.

when my horse has had them when there is no pus come out i clean twice daily with peroxide or idionie(sp) and plug it. and he has also been fine out like that.
