We get them drained, pack them with sugar / iodine paste to fill the void. .

YES to the sugar/iodine paste. It works great on all kinds of injuries. I'm currently treating proud flesh with it and the results are stellar.

Good news! It was an abscess as originally thought. When I poultice it further up around the heel, it obviously did the trick. Farrier came out first thing and said to keep poulticing for a couple more days, then treat as normal so long as she doesn't go lame again. She is still slightly lame but not nearly as bad. I have put her out in the arena today.
