Hello all,

I am in need of a little advice on hoof abscesses/to hear of anyone with similar experiences.

I have a Tb x Hanoverian who was barefoot for about 6 months (to cut the long story short, we moved to an extremely remote area with no roads where not many farriers will dare to venture, and so decided to go down the barefoot road with the use of Cavallo sports boots). He always had good, hard feet but the ground here, in the Highlands of Scotland, is terrible and so his feet began to look a little bare. About a month ago I decided to get him re-shod and the farrier said his feet were pretty hard and in good enough condition but a bit bare.. I quote 'there's not much hoof to put this shoe onto' and although he tried a short nail he said it was too soft and kept bending so ended up using the usual long nails on his hind hooves. Tiro was uncomfortable when getting the back shoes on and looked a bit pained but unfortunately I did not stop the farrier doing his job, I just presumed he knew what he was doing. Now I am sure the situation lead to a 'close nail'...

After 2 weeks Tiro came in a little lame, and 2 days later was hopping lame.. couldn't put any weight whatsoever on his near hind. No swelling, no heat, no tenderness anywhere. To cut the long story short, I had the vet up twice .. we did nerve blocks which indicated the problem was in his foot, followed by an x-ray which showed no broken bones/fractures. Vet concluded the problem must be an abscess and left me with bute and the instruction to poultice, poultice, poultice.

2 1/2 weeks later and still no sign of a rupture. He is weight bearing better and walking tentatively but easier, though as soon as I attempt to trot him he refuses to put any weight on it. He reacts to hoof testers on the left of his sole but not to a huge extent. I have noticed a small black spot on the sole of his hoof which I believe may be the tract the infection took. I am sure I noticed a very small amount of pus on my animalintex one morning last week, though not a huge amount. Yesterday the vet gave me a 5 day course of penicillin to start on however I am dubious about this as I'm sure that this will not help before the abscess has drained? I am soaking in Epsom salts and poulticing with animalintex.. but it is so frustrating not seeing any signs of improvement.

Has anyone had a similar experience in terms of a long wait for the abscess to surface? Have antibiotics ever worked for you? I just need some reassurance I think, I'm so worried about my poor boy! I have been a horse owner for about 10 years and have worked in a few yards over the years but amazingly this is my first experience with an abscess. Thanks in advance for any information and sorry for the long-winded post. :o

I feel your pain my horse is now close to being lame for 2 weeks. I started with the vet digging about no pus found just an area along the white line. Politiced like you than blacksmith had a try to find pus still no luck carried on polticing swapped to dry ones after few days. Than she got really lame so vet again dug a bit deeper and got pus. Carrying on polticing but she is still in pain feeling at a loss what is best for her. I am concerend that she has not been given antibiotics because I'm sure she has had them in the past as long as the pus has been found.
Unlike you my mare usually gets 1 abcess a year but never as bad as this one. So no help to you but I know what you are going through. I will be ringing vet again in the morning!!

I share your belief that antibiotics are contraindicated for a foot abscess which is not open unless there is infection spreading up the leg. My understanding is that they can cause serious problems by stopping the infection from working its way out.

I assume that the shoe is off, you don't say?

My horse had lots of hoof abscesses when I first got him. I was told not to give bute, as the abscess needs the inflammation to burst.
Not sure how I feel about that tbh, as they are very painful.
I was never given antibiotics as I was told that they could cause the abscess to capsulate and stop draining.
Kx

I've also had a nightmare with abscesses that last think we had about 5 or 6. With advice I contacted sarah at forage plus and was advised that feeding a good hoof supplement (I feed there hoof health balancer) and also extra vit e zinc and copper which she said would help...

She was right and we haven't had an abscess since October (hope I've not just cursed us now)

I'm also having problems getting rid of an abcess (See post Recurring abcess?) The pattern is that he's hopping lame, I put a poultice on, a small amount of pus comes out, he quickly recovers and then around two weeks later it flares up again.
I'm now thinking that I haven't been covering up the hoof long enough and it's being reinfected, especially with all the wet, muddy ground.
I've never had an abcess go on as long as this but I've heard of a few in my area who have had more problems than usual this winter.

Hope you get yours sorted out soon.

Badgerdog - I was in exactly the same situation as you. My horse would be sound for a week or so but then the abscess would flare up again. I guessed that I wasn't keeping it clean and dry for long enough so I bought a poultice boot from Shires and kept it on for about 4 weeks. Thankfully he has not had any problems since - touch wood!
OP -I am sorry I can't help as I have only had experience with abscesses that have burst or have been successfully dug out. You do have my sympathy though!

Nickijem - I bought one of those Shire's poultice boots tonight, just before I saw your post! I'm determined to keep it covered for longer this time, it's so tempting to stop putting poultices on when your horse is sound and you've even started riding them but I'm going to have to persevere!

the shires poultice boot has been my godsend if you find it isn't very snug buy some newborn cheap nappies, then a little duct tape around the top of the boot once it was on and it stayed on in all weathers. I did bring in at night though.

I had 2 abscesses reinfect twice last year as I didn't keep it covered long enough to seal.

Thanks for the tip!

Have you tried actually soaking the whole hoof three times a day in warm water and epsom salts? This will usually do the trick, just when you get fed up doing it at around day 4 it suddenly erupts! I then continue to soak for another 3 days twice a day. But I always leave turned out to encourage movement, nor do I cover the hoof at any point, nor have I ever let my vet or farrier dig one out.

I have never had one with a prolonged infection doing this. I wouldn't give antibiotics personally as this will just prolong the whole thing, usually with giving antibiotics for an abscess it just subdues the abscess until you stop medicating and then it flares up again.

However if you feel that the infection is tracking up into the leg then that is a different matter altogether. I hope you get it sorted soon, it is awful watching them hobble about with one.

Sorry for the delayed reply... it has been a busy weekend so no time for the computer.
Tiro is still as lame as before. Today is the last day on his course of antibiotics and of course, no change :( he is also just had his last sachet of bute this morning so, from the general consensus here that bute and antibiotics just prolong abscesses, I really hope that just continuing to poultice and soak will draw the damn thing out before too long.

I bought 4kg of Epsom salts and soaked twice a day for 10/20 mins each time but ran out last week and haven't got a hold of any more since (we live in the middle of no where so it takes anything an eternity to get delivered). I wiill hopefully get some more early this week so I will up the soaking to 3 times a day.

Has anyone heard of ichthammol for abscesses? I have a friend who is a vet in Germany, specialising in hoof conditions, who says ichthammol works wonders (lather it over problem area and wrap up for 3 days... 99% of the time when you unwrap the hoof it will have done the trick) but there's so many magic cures out there I just don't know what to believe. Anyway tried to find it in the UK but it is almost impossible so I am considering importing it online but not sure whether it will be worth it.

I know movement is meant to be better for abscesses but I'm keeping him inside as my other horse has just gone away on loan (they were both meant to go but Tiro can't until the abscess is over) and I fear if I turn him out alone he will wear himself down with anxiety. I put him out one day about a week ago and he came in almost feverish and wouldn't eat for a day or so. Poor boy. So I just walk him for 10 minutes 2 or 3 times a day. I will try and up this as much as I can and see what happens.

Fingers crossed now we are off the bute etc I might get some pus!
