My mare Bonnie had an abscess in one of her front hoofs 10 days ago . Vet came and dug the pus out .
She is now sound again been barefoot for two years and does well like this .But now she has a deep hole near the front of her hoof , which I'm worried will crack or a stone gets stuck in it out hacking .
Have looked at getting boots for her till it grows out but she has wider then long hoofs so not easy to get ones to fit .
Just wondering if anyone knows if there is anything you can put in the hole ,that will stay in for hacking ? or any other ideas.
Thank you

Another for hoof putty (Red HOrse products).

If you can pop it on and then leave the horse in a stable with a dry bed for a couple of hours then its more likely to set.

Hoof putty, but these abscesses are best left to burst by themselves, then generally, there isn't a big hole. I only ever got the vet to do it once and he made a hole, we let it drain until dressing was dry, then left it well alone and low and behold, within a few weeks he was lame again and the abscess burst out of his coronet band.

I’ve been using red horse hood stuff to plug our abscess hole and it’s only come out 3 times over the last 6+ weeks, twice due to the herd thundering around like looneys for ages and then yesterday in the torrential rain.

I just plug the holes then squeeze down hard with a piece of kitchen roll to get out the excess moisture. I seem to only need to change it twice a week now and could probably get away with less often although did it more initially whilst it was bigger.

If it helps a few years ago I had the same concerns (pony had flinted himself out hunting) and did have boots I could use but got told to shove some putty in and crack on. I had the keratex stuff at the time, I suspect the red horse stuff is easier!
It was all fine!
