My horse had surgery to cut away lots of horrible pus and gunk after a long standing hoof abscess couldn't be sorted by farriery alone. Does anyone have any experience of how long it will take for the raw tissue to form a skin over? He's got a bar shoe and hospital plate on and I'm changing the Manuka dressings every other day. I know it will take a long time for the hoof to grow down and I'm not in a rush to ride but it would be good to get an expectation of when the "rawness" is likely to be sealed over.

I cant advise, only had sole done and eventually after two weeks put him out in field with home made boot, not fully healed, in retrospect I would have bought proper soft [injury type] boot which I did not know about at that time.
Also I would have walked as much as possible every day on tarmac [sound] as well as plenty turnout in arena for a fling and a chill.
I would do everything to promote rapid strong hoof growth, pro earth Pro Hoof,, and 50gms micronised linseed is good, some salt and plenty of fibre NO MOLASSES.
If feeding minerals it will be fine to provide ad lib soaked hay as you have to keep the gut moving esp as he is stabled.

A hole in the sole will take about three months.

Anywhere else on the wall will need to grow from the top down, so it really depends on where the hoof has been cut away.

One of mine had surgery for septic pedal osteitis a few years ago, which left her with a tube of a hole through the hoof wall and right through her sole. I had to flush it daily to begin with, but as far as I remember the raw parts hardened up quite quickly, within the first week or so. I got some hoof putty for her later in the process which helped when turning her back out (she also had bandages and a boot on!).
