As above really - its just behind the white line on his front toe, farrier has cut away some sole and a little bit of gunk came out, so hot poulticed it and put him in his box, planned to do again in morning then put on a dry poultice tom night if no more gunk coming out - then what - the farrier said to fill the hole with Stockholm tar to keep rubbish out and turn out - is there anything else I should be doing?

Thanks

if it was me?

I'd hot polutice fore a couple of days,
I would also be tubing with salt water.
I would also wither be packign with stockholm tar or unternatively spraying it with Iodine solution (straight iodine.. not purple spray)

Give it time and dont expect your horse to be sound in a week.

Mine has had one in the same place last week, my friend recommended a sugar poultice, very cheap and seemed to do the job!!

I hot tubbed in salt water for 10 mins then put on a hot wet poultice with a load of granulated sugar on it, did this twice a day the farrier has put the shoe back on today! I did use animalintex as it was all I had but you can use gamgee as a the poultice material.

i think your farrier has given you good advice. keep poulticing till no more gunk comes out. once horse is sound, put the shoe back on..
both my horses were sound and back in work a week after having the shoe removed when they had one (old girl wasn't actually shod tho, vet gave me some putty to plug the hole with once it had fully drained).. of course time to heal depends on how bad the abscess is.!

Great, thanks for all the advice, funny thing is he wasn't even lame so I think we may have just caught it in time.
I don't have any stockholm tar, is cournecrecine (SP) close enough? I can get some if its not?

Cornucrescine doesn't have the same properties as Stockholm tar and I don't think would be terribly suitable, you'd be best off getting some Stockholm Tar.

my mare has recently also had a abcess in her foot.

I hot tubbed & hot polticed 2 x per day for 3 days, with box rest. Thereafter turned her out with a bandaged & dry poltice on for a week.

She was on no antibiotics from the vet - just keep as clean and after a few days, as dry as possible.

Hope you ponio is ok though LBxx
