Mare (who has been on box rest for other lameness) had a foot abscess about 4 weeks ago, cleared up nicely, she was assessed by vet for her other problems and was found to be sound.

Monday morning she took a hop out of her stable and I thought uh-oh, thats what you did before....she is still looking sore so vet coming tonight. She isn't so much lame (although its hard to tell as she is on box rest and only walks as far as 10 metres at a time) but looking sore and is decidely grumpier than usual, which is exactly what she did before.

If it is an abscess, its going to completely screw up things as she is due to go the RVC on Monday for an independant opinion for the insurance. If she doesn't go then its going to be another month before she can go again.

Is there anything I can do to prevent it, although I guess its probably a reccurance from the original one? The original one wasn't associated with any nail holes and was very deep. Vet did comment that she had wonderfully hard hooves too so puzzled as to why she has developed 2 in a month when she has never had one before.

Any ideas greatfully appreciated!

You could try tubbing the foot. If its deep it might not do much though. Movement can help push them out but you cant do that on box rest! Unfortunately you cant really prevent abcesses as such, apart from regular trimming, clean bed, avoid wet/dry/wet /dry cycle.

Thanks! Ugh so frustrated, vets been and agrees she's not right, but she's only 'off' for a couple of strides and she cant get a reaction with hoof testers so not alot we can do at the moment. We couldn't trot up as everywhere is like an ice rink, we had to make do with walking her up and down the barn aisle. We are going to monitor her as this was how her last one started off, but it wasn't until she was trimmed and re-shod that she really went ouch....

Its so frustrating as I keep her bed very clean and dry as she's in al lthe time and she is shod every 5 weeks...her timing is awful!!

My friends horse had an abcess once that had none of the usual signs! very weird, didnt react to hoof testers at all and she had swelling up the leg. Was intermittently lame then all of a sudden out burst the pus at the coronet band. You could try feeling for a pulse at the back of the fetlock and see if there is one and if it increases.
Good luck!

i would think its a recurrence, perhaps try an xray to see if it def is, my old horse had a nasty grumbling one for ages and it really was awful, best to know and treat it to fully get rid otherwise it could go on for ages.

hi have some ionic colloidal silver 10ppm handy and clean the hoof out with the ics and then soak some gause in ics and place in area and vetwrap change every 12 hours if theres anything there that should not be the ics will kill it off straight away, its the best natural antibiotic around.
hope this helps,best regards
will.

Well if she does go on Monday she will be having her feet x-rayed then, so hopefully that will show it up....

If she doesn't go then she will be having it investigated further by vet, but yes I am quite certain its still there grumbling away...
