Hoof Abscess

One of the horses i am looking to buy currently has a hoof abscess. As far as i can see, in general terms, these are caused by infections brought on by dirt getting through cracks in the hoof, cuts, flaring etc. Most seem avoidable with a little luck and a good farrier...

However, does any one know how they are brought on by diet or if their are any other causes? Obviously don't want to buy if this could be sign of something bigger??

To be honest, any horse can have an abcess. If the horse was particularly susceptible to recurring abcesses it would make me worrybut not a one off. Still worth looking at imho!!

and also there is a lot about at the mo. I wouldn't worry to much and wouldn't put me off. If you are just mention it to the vet when the vetting is done if it gets that far. If the horse has a lot off hoof abscess you can normally see the old burst marks. I looked at one horse who had 6 in total between all feet, I left him as I felt that was extreme

It's seriously useful to get a better idea on these things as fortunately none of our horses have had abscess' and i just don't know anything about them.

I have actually tried him out hunting once already and he went very well all day. Although, someone who had recently rented him mentioned he had had an abscess at the time. As a result i'm guessing they didn't manage to clear it first time round.
