Hi

My mare had nail bind which has made a abscess on her hoof. She is wearing a poultice and the abscess it draining well. Today when changing her poultice I noticed that one of the holes at the side of her frog, had a thick white-yellowish discharge. What is this discharge should I be worried. :(

I don't think so, are you using animalintex to poultice? if so sometimes what looks like puss/gunk is actually just a layer of the animalintex.

Is she becoming sounder? Try soaking her hoof in hand hot water and epsom salts if she will allow this?

Yeah it is animalintex and it is a hot poultice. I took the poultice off so it was just the hoof and I saw the gunk and I touched it and it was like glupey and yellowish. Yeah she has improved at first she could barely walk but now she is walking fine. We have been soaking her foot in hot water and salt which has been done for a week now :) I hope it is just the poultice tomorrow morning when I change it again I will check to see if any more is coming out hopefully it will of just been the poultice

I used to get quite excited when i took the animalintex off and saw the yellow/clear slime thinking yes the puss is draining only to find out that the slime was part of the gel like layer. If your still worried get a photo and post on here and I will tell you if its the same as what I used to get :)

A little tip for anyone putting a poultice on:
Get the poultice ready, get some silver foil, place the poultice on the foil so that when you place it on the foot you can mould the poultice around the effected area, this not only helps the fitting of the poultice but due to the added insulation of the foil it will make the poultice least twice as long.
When you are sure that there is no more matter to be drained I would always put one more DRY poultice covered in cotton wool to help draw the moister out from the previous poultices

Slight hijack of thread but would you all use similar treatment as with an absess for a horse that was lame following being shod so short he bled and two days later was dog lame with a very warm hoof and puffy leg? Farrier should be back in a day or two to assess and poss put pads on but I would like to try and make horse more comfy in the meantime? Thanks
