My mare managed to pick up a small overreach injury about 4cm across taking herself home after a maize monster related debacle on Friday. She’s not lame.

I spoke to my vet as a precaution and she has bandaged it and said she must be box rested. Potentially for up to a fortnight. Feels like overkill but I’m absolutely not ignoring vet advice.

I think she is really going to need at least some hand grazing at some point so wondering about a medical boot to go over a bandage like the woof wear medical hoof boot to keep it dry.

Vet seemed to think this would be a problem to get on and off but they seem to have a whacking great zip.

Anyone used a boot with an overreach injury?

A nappy under one of these would work, if the injury is under where the cable tie goes.
I used one for similar and just bought some normal long cable ties when I ran out. It takes seconds to put on and just cut the tie to remove.

I'm assuming movement isn't going
to affect the injury? I had one that just kept opening up again every time he walked, so box rest was necessary in the end.

I’m not known for my bandaging skills and I think she needs the bandage and dressing to stay in several days.
You’d pop them on over the existing bandage and dressing which can stay in situ.

I’ve used the vet striders upthread too, but for abscesses, they are excellent. Might press on wound, though?

Yes I think that they are trying to reduce movement. It will only be if she decides to box walk and a bit of hand grazing is the lesser of two evils. At the moment she’s being fabulous.

This is a vet strider on one of mine (they used to be called horse crocz when I bought them) in action.

It shows the nappy/vet wrap/duct tape arrangement, and the black plastic vet strider goes on top for 12 hour turnout. The pressure of the cable tie of the vet strider would concern me for an overreach, though.
