Hoof boots and sore feet

Posting again re: my welsh A & his ongoing arthritic knee saga. So, we are on bute for the knee. Still not really much better re: bending for farrier. The problem NOW is that pony was shod in front as is horrendous when meets with any amount of non-grass surface. Always was absolutely fine with shoes. Of course now we can't have the shoes as it's just unacceptable to expect him to have the shoes nailed on. He's even struggling on the hard grass and ruts in the field (OK in winter months). I'm now thinking about hoof boots. Has anyone experience a) using these in the field, a specific brand maybe - pony won't be ridden b) on a welsh A or similar . Somewhat worried about staying on, rubbing etc.

my laminitic hill pony has easyboot RX's for when she starts to go into laminitis. She wears these all the time in the stable/wandering around the yard and as she gets better and can go out in the field in them. They stay on, they have pads in them, rubbing they are OK. I remove them daily, twice would be better, clean them and if possible let her go on rubber matted stables barefoot for an hour or more to give her a break. The knack is to keep her feet dry, dry towel them, dry towel the boots out, use athlete's foot talc in the boots to try and reduce fungal problems.
She loves her boots and they have just about saved her life. In winter I put them on when the yard is frozen to protect her feet.

My chap has always been shod before I had him, but because I wasn't riding out on roads I left them off. It took him a very long time before he would walk off the grass verge! I would say a good 6 months, over the winter we dont have a problem because its softer but his feet are constantly getting harder (aside from the little trims which means he has 2 weeks of avoiding the pebbles!). I guess what I am saying is give them time to harden, only problem with boots is that the hoof wont wear naturally, meaning more trims etc. I have considered them recently though for riding out when we are going up rocky paths :-) - laminitic ponies are a whole other ballgame though!

Mine wears Equine Fusion boots in the field sometimes. She has Cushings and sometimes her soles get quite soft and thin and they eliminate pain. She did have Cavellos but they were too big (smallest size). They are great but do get wet inside if it rains. They rubbed her bulbs slightly when new but I just put some tubigrip or a sock on (clean every day) and they were fine.
 
I think paddy's suggestion is probably a good one, I think there are small sized fusions which might be researching for turnout too.
I would worry why the pony is so footsore though? diet? metabolic issues?
