im preparing taz for having his shoes off as it will be cheaper and im hoping that eventually they will become a better quality then they are now

but i dont want them to rub his scar, it has made his foot a bit of an odd shape but it doesnt bother him, he has completely de-nerved that side of the foot if not most of it although he has shown lameness in the foot so he can feel something in there :o but i tink my only problem is with him not being able to feel it is that something could rub or cause a futher injury to it...

im probably way over thinking this but any suggestions?

If I were you I'd forget the boots for now and take the work on rough surfaces slowly until he can cope. With the state of his feet (and appalling shoeing!!) there's little doubt that they will improve very, very quickly when you have his shoes off.

The neoprene gaiters on something like Easyboot gloves shouldn't rub. However, I rode a horse last year that was said to be sensitive to rubs. After putting on the boot, we initially left the gaiter folded down. Then, wrapped a piece of soft fabric around the pastern/top of hoof, did up the gaiter, and folded the cloth down over the gaiter. The whole week, there was no problem with rubbing. Hope this helps!

yeah thats what i am doing :) he will hae as much time as he needs as i dont have a saddle anyway but around here we are on clay and in the summer if it hasnt been rolled it is solid and pointy and there is a lot of flint too, he will only wear them on fast hacks or very long stoney ones :)

this is about 6 months ago and i had just changed farrier it was his first set and was close to being due for shoeing he has been having remedial shoeing since i changed as i had had a spate of bad farries which ruined his feet :(

You could try the easyboot gloves without gaitors .. sold as glue ons .. they are actually simply the shell that fits over the hoof itself.. add a power strap to ensure it conforms to the top of the hoof and use mueller tape underneath.. scroll down the page on link below and you can see how this is done http://easycareinc.typepad.com/from_the_horses_mouth/2009/04/index.html

This is what I was going to say :) Before I put gaitors on to the glue-ons (I was trying them out for size), I lunged my haffy in hers and they didn't move in the slightest.

If you are serious about barefoot you need to become your own expert, start off with Feet First [ignore the seaweed ] and Rockley Farm, there are good videos on Cavallo site about how to trim, I am not suggesting you do it yourself at this stage, but further down the line you might manage, the big thing is to absorb the information and watch the hooves as they change,
