I had to retire my pony in the Spring. I had all of her shoes removed and a short time later she developed an abcess. As the ground was still wet, I then had her front shoes put back on.

As all she does is mooch around the field or go out a couple of times a week for an in hand walk, I would ideally like her barefoot. I had her front shoes removed on Monday and tonight she is looking slightly uncomfortable.

I realise that it is early days but I do not want any problems to develop and was wondering about using hoof boots for a while until she adapts. Perhaps having them on in the day and off at night or vice versa. Also having them on to go out for her walks.

Any thoughts on whether or not this is the best thing to do?

Also, if I do go for hoof boots, any recommedations or ones to avoid?

There are better people on here to advise about transitioning to barefoot than me but think the key is conditioning work and hoof boots can help but for appropriate advice on hoof boots speak to the folks at hoofboutique as they will give you advice on which ones will suit if you have the measurements of your horse's hooves to hand.

If she is sore, IMO, she needs help and that will be boots. An in hand walk is generally on harder surfaces and her feet are accustomed to being shod therefore have not built up any strength.

Why wouldn't you boot her to help her?
