Hoof conditioner

Hi guys, quick question for you.

My loan horse has a cracked hoof, and the owner asked me to get conditioner and put it on every day. The one I got is reputedly very good but its all in german on the tub. So I'm wondering, as I never needed it on my last horse, what is the best way to apply and when? before or after riding? Should I hose hooves clean and then apply, or brush clean and apply to dry hoof? Inside hoof? Outside only? I have avoided putting it on the frog, is that correct? Cheers

I would hose then put it on as it's meant to hold in moisture. If you want something to put on the inside and on the frog I would use greese, but you can put what you have on the inside and on frog, it'll not hurt. If you are riding in a school that is sandy I would put it on before riding and after. Anything that will dry it out or remove the conditioner then put it on as much as possible.
 
Usually it's best to put it on dry, clean hooves.
Which product is it? Can you google it?
It would probably be best to copy what's on the label and use one of the free translation sites, http://www.freetranslation.com/ is quite good.
If you're really stuck, I grew up in Germany so might be able to help you out...

So far we have 1 for apply to wet hooves and 1 apply to dry. Anyone care to give an additional vote on this?

I do both - getting some moisture into hoof in the form of water is good and putting conditioner over the top should in theory lock moisture in so if I have a handy hose or bucket of water then I do but if just slapping it on out in field (yes I know not very BHS!) just dry. I use Keven bacon stuff and it is very good...
 
I often use aqueous (sp) cream from the chemist - great stuff!

I also had some German stuff in a green tub Huffsalbe or something like. I just used to pick/brush out foot, slap it all over the sole - not worrying too much about frog, and then do the outside with a brush. I usually did it after a shower when feet were wet anyway.
 
I think I have the exact same German stuff in the green tub as ur describing!

Most of the time I was hosing and cleaning the hooves and then slapping on a good dollop inside and out. By the sounds of it, I mustn't be going too far wrong. But just wanted to be sure since I really don't want to be doing the wrong thing where my girls footsies are concerned. Cheers guys

if it's in a green tub it's probably Effol... which imho does exactly what the name suggests: f all!

Cornucresine is much better for cracks.
If you want to get more moisture into the feet, I had a farrier recommend E45 years ago.
 
Sounds like Effol, the instructions are there in various languages, including English, but you need to search for it! Clean the hooves and apply over the hoof wall with the brush provided. Can't remember if this one does the soles or not.
 

I wouldn't bother about wetting/soaking the hoof.

Hooves are 60% water anyway so you just need to stop them drying out.

Hoof heal is brill
in the summer for keeping feet moist.

Kevin Bacon in the winter is grease to keep the wet out.
