Hoof crack ... Can i seal it?

Ok so forgive me for this rather blokeish question but can i seal up a hoof crack with a bit of silicone of something?

Said crack is the most likely cause of an abcess which the vet dealt with tonight (why is it always a bloody Sunday!?!) :rolleyes:

The shoe came off, hole dug out to relieve the pressure and all wrapped up .... a much happier boy in stable tonight.

So is there anything I can use to seal this crack which runs up the front of the hoof ..... its far from big or 'dangerous' looking ... knew i should have got a pic!

Thanks in advance for anyone still not laughing at my idea. Constructive help/ advise much appreciated :o

The crack isnt from the abcess but the vet thinks its the likely cause with all this horrible wet muddy weather we are having.

The vet made a drain hole in the botton of the foot and he is on a few days soaking and hot poultice wraps to drain it... if that makes sense :o
 
Erm no I wouldn't recommend silicon or anything like that, once abcess is sorted, get the farrier out they have 'stuff' that can fill in cracks

Thanks but does that contradict keeping the whole foot clean by being wrapped in poultices twice a day? Or are you talking after the infection has gone? :confused:

When I got my cob mare she had a crack. My blacksmith put 2 metal staples in the hoof to keep it together as it grew out.

This is more like a slightly bigger hairline crack as in general he has brilliant feet!

You can buy "stuff" from the tack shop - it's called Keratex Hoof Putty - for around £15 a tin. You only need a tiny bit, so a tin lasts forever.

Make sure the abscess is completely drained (the putty's medicated but better to be safe than sorry), then cram a small lump into the hole and in theory it should stay in till the hoof grows out.

So is 'dooby' ... I have a mental block with words sometimes so I use the word 'Dooby' with a hand action and it normally does the job ... Example classic which is always brought up over a dinner party was when i was saying to the OH about the 'board 'dooby' that you put the hot 'dooby' on .... with hand actions' and the OH just looked at me and said .. "you mean the ironing board?" ... YES thats the one .. thats what i said :rolleyes:
 
there was a horse at my yard the owner use to seal her horses hoof after it was shod as it always use to get craks in the hoof (were the old nails were) and it helped and didn't effect the horse! (typicall Thoroughbred feet) hope this helps :)

not without the say so of my vet and or farrier - as others have said they may want it open for it to heal, and sealing it without knowing what your doing could cause you a whole load of heartache.

for the cost of a phone call to your vet and or your farrier i would not be messing.
 
Talk to you'r farrier first, but a farrier that i had a number of years ago used wood filler on one of my horses feet!! he did it after a trim, cleaned out cracks, he said it stopped dirt getting in and making worse, it did seem to help, and being wood filler it flexed with the hoof! BUT talk to you'r farrier first!!
 
My question would be what is causing the crack? It wouldn't be the abcess, that only creates a little split.....you need to address the cause - imbalance? wld?
