I have just started loaning a TB ex racer. He has cracked hooves that are split from top to bottom - the crack starts in the coronary band and is split all the way down. His back feet are in great condition and perfectly shaped so this only affects his front feet. At the moment he has metal plates screwed on to the front to keep the split held together but it's not something my farrier has not come across before. They are similar to this;

The owner said he has had them on for years, even racing in them, and they just need to be moved every once in a while to keep up with the hoof growth. He has never been lame with it, though I'm not sure if I need to keep an eye on it in winter as I don't want dirt getting in and causing problems.

With TB's I have had before I found that regular coats of hoof moist and adding a supplement of Farriers Formula to feed kept their feet in good condition but I haven't come across a crack that starts from the top before.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do to solve the problem as I would rather try to cure it than just treat the symptoms.

If you PM Lucy Priory on here, she has helped hoof cracks grow out.

The problem that you might have, is that the crack is far more likely to grow out if the horse is unshod/BF and as the horse is on loan you might not be able to get the owner to agree to this.
