Yesterday night my daugter's horse managed to find hole, put his foot down it and when it emerged he was minus an area of hoof about 1in by 3/4 of an inch, from his coronet down.
It is clean, clay cold and he is sound & up to date with tetanus. I have spoken to my farrier who is coming to look at it tonight. He reckons it could take about a year to grow out.
He has said to work as horse as normal but keep area covered to prevent infection.
Anyone any experience of this or something like it as I am worried about working him with a hole in his hoof??

My pony had an area of his hoof wall removed because of an infection. I've been using hoof boots to keep stones out of it while hacking, and he's coping very well.

It is possible for your farrier to insert a filler to build up the hoof whilst it grows down. It may be though that the damage is not as bad as you think, and pony can carry on as normal. Just wait until your farrier has seen it.
