Hoof emergency

I adopted a rescue very recently, and I can't get a blacksmith to fix hooves before monday. My horse has awful looking hooves now, cracked, over grown and stinky. I have washed them and someone told me to put him stand In epsom salt foot bath. I got the salts and buckets, but now I don't know how much salts per gallon, and for how long should I keep him standing In it. Simply washing and brushing the hooves daily has brought the stink down. Any tips to make him feel better for these few days left before getting his "pedicure" done?

As above, keep doing what you're doing until Monday. If you weren't able to get a blacksmith for a couple of weeks I would probably suggest something different.

It's likely the feet have just been not looked after and left to grow and let thrush take hold, once the farrier has cut away the infected tissue I am sure they will look better. You farrier is best placed to advise on how to treat your horse.
 
Okay, correct word is farrier, I better write that down. In my language we say kengittäjä which translates roughly to "one that puts shoes on". There is no soft tissue, but smell lingers around. I hope I can ease his discomfort with what I am doing until monday.

Very interesting actually, I have played with google translate and apparently the word in Finnish is kengitysseppä (farrier).
 
The blackness and smell make it sound like thrush. Try to keep the hooves dry and clean so that the air can circulate. Apply some iodine to disinfect - it can be picked up at many tack shops.
 
2pm will farrier Come today. It is 8:30 am here now. He has allowed me to work on his feet nicely, back leg on his rihgt side is something he tries to pull away. That is the stinker. Rest are better with those salt baths. That one is better already too, but saying it was fine would be a lie. I report back after his horsey pedicure is done.
 
Terramyacin spray always used to clear it up, but then it was banned without prescription.

Do we get foot pictures after the farrier? As a sometimes barefoot person I love to see feet develop and change (with to without shoes). In fact, a before set of pictures before the farrier, to compare, would also be good.
 
I try To remember to snap pics before and after. He has No shoes atm. And I will ask the farrier for his opinion wethee to put shoes on or not. We start walking In forests with him after the hooves are fixed
 
You need to get some Cleantrax. One treatment will usually clear it, occasionally you need two if the infection is really bad. Its much more effective than endless soaking. I use the corner of a plastic feed bag to do it, but if you think the horse will be silly about it you can get a dedicated poltice boot.
 
Some of the product named here are not available at least with those names here. But I will keep asking a bajillion questions and make my self a complete 5-yo with my demands of answers and advice. I promise I will let you know if he gives me a lolly, or refuses to come to see my horse ever again 😒😞
