Can anyone suggest any good hoof hardener with an antibacterial ingredient included.. My youngster has a pucture wound in his sole it is very soft underneath the wound and surrounding area, and my farrier reckons that he has had an abcess but it is sorting itself out now.. He has heat somedays but not others but is very tender nearly all the time. He has recommended I put a hardener on it but cant find one which has a antibacterial agent included to prevent any furthur infection.. Have ask farrier if I should get my vet but he doesnt think it needs antibiotics.

Many Thanks

To be honest there is no point using hardener on the hoof now but instead to start feeding supplements and good feed to strengthen the hooves from the inside out. Hoof hardener wont really fix weak hooves as they are now. Not sure if itll have an effect on the sole of the foot since its not really designed for there - but you could always give it a try?

As for the antibacterial part, Id say give your vet a call. Since the wound goes inside the foot many products will sting him and may cause more harm then good, you need a pH neutral and mild antibacterial product.

I have used a weak mixture of hydrogen peroxide on my horses foot before when he had a puncture. It dosent sting but kills any bacteria in the foot. It breaks down into hydrogen and oxygen too so not a nasty chemical at all!
