Hoof oil?

I occasionally use Kevin Bacons stuff. That just looks like a pot of lard tbh, kit must be oil based because it melts in the summer.

Yet my farrier told me to use that, although only after shoeing. I wonder what the logic was, as he clearly said not to bother with anything else.

I shall ask when I see him again.

Although admittedly that advice was four years ago and I still have the same pot. I wonder when the advice changed?

No, it is not part of normal routine grooming now, as it is now wel lknown (but obviously not completely accepted) that regular use of hoof oil is actually harmful to the hoof. Occasional us for shows etc is fine.

As someone else said, if the hooves need moisture, the very best thing is a daily ten minute soak in water.

what absolute *******s!!! i've looked after hundreds of horses in my time and everyone has hiad hoof oil-i'm not just talking showing, but hunting, polo, show jumping, racing et al!! i wouldn't have dared go against the wishes of my bosses, but now times have changed, and not for the better in alot of cases- do any of you finish off by damping manes down and sponging around the eyes, nose anddock area or is that harmful too??

You are not alone with a bit of good 'old fashioned' grooming there... Spoke to farrier about this only the other day, he said cornucresine is much the same as Kevin Bacon, not to use too often. He also said its 'not what you put on, its what you put in...'
Personally I am in love with the smell of cornucresine and the nails on one hand are definately better than the other! When I ride out I like the horse to be turned out well - which means hoof polish!!

I use Effol Hoof Cream in the summer to stop the hooves from getting too dry and cracking. I tend to use it once or twice a week and less often if their hooves are looking good.

mine gets hoof heal on. Fantastic stuff - you can really tell the difference if you dont put it on for a couple of weeks. Its got alsorts of odd stuff in it... turps, beeswax, pine....

In summer, I use cornucrescine twice a week and effol twice a week, it's taken nearly four years to get my tb's feet right, with various tinctures and supplements. We now have what works for us, my farrier actually asked me to take a photo at the last visit as he never thought we'd get there but we have

Just finished a tub of Kevin Bacon's, and bought some Effol to replace it. I've been very pleased with both and would recommend them highly.
I always paint his hooves before riding, it just looks nice! If it helps his hooves too then it's got to be a good thing.
