I'd like some advice on my 2 yr old filly's hind feet. As I've posted about recently, I sent her away earlier this year to grass livery at stud (as I have no other youngsters for her to play with). She arrived home almost 3 weeks go with various niggly ailments (previously posted about) and which are slowly on the mend.

She has always had good feet without cracks, and has been fed a quality Balancer since birth. She is bench-kneed so is attended to by my vet's remedial farrier who shoes her infront and trims her behind every 5 weeks. He attended her at stud, but inbetween times she would have been left at grass.

She arrived home with a full-length sandcrack, on both hind hooves. Both are to the outside of each hoof, and both are in the same location; the last quarter. The farrier attended her last week but was unconcerned about the cracks, saying they looked superficial. However, in the past few days the cracks have opened in the dry weather and do run from the coronet the whole way down. I am concerned that leaving them isn't going to help. On closer inspection her hind feet also look slightly splayed, particulary on the inner edge.

The photo below (of her o/s hind) was taken the day she returned home from stud before she was trimmed. The farrier did not alter the shape, though; merely ran the rasp around the lower edge of the wall to tidy it up. The hoof shape is the same. You can also see the crack. Due to weight bearing, the crack is wider at the lower end but runs as a fine line up to the coronet band. I've started her on Formula-4 Feet since her return home.

Am I worrying un-necessarily or should I arrange for another farriery visit (either the remedial chap again, or my excellent "regular" farrier)?

i think it depends how deep the actual crack is. if it's just the very outside layer of the hoof (only a mm or so deep) then as long as it is kept properly rasped, and the farrier rounds the edge so the outside of the hoof where the crack is, is not weight-bearing, i wouldn't worry. if it starts opening up, and splaying, then i'd worry more.

I wouldn't worry too much, summer wet/dry conditions cause the same issues to many horses who are unshod.

I'd use Hoof-heal, which is a deep penetrating oil that replaces & locks in moisture. I've used it for 8yrs or so & swear by it to improve feet. The cracks have always grown out & without fail the horses I've used it on dont lose shoes as often.

Thanks guys. I'll trust the farrier and see how it goes. He'll be out in another 4 weeks, so can re-check her then.

PS: I use Hoof & Heal too. Absolutely fabulous stuff isn't it. Really soaks in, unlike traditional hoof oil type products. I'll carry on with that then and the Kevin Bacon! x
