Hello everyone, I recently purchased about 9 months ago a 6-year-old mare. She has stood perfectly for two farriers about 2 weeks ago a new farrier where I board her I got a call saying that she broke her halter ring in half where she was tied up and had to be sedated just to have her two front feet trimmed. As of today the farrier informed me that I needed to continue to keep her in her stall for another week because she is still too sore. Is that normal behavior cuz I am a fairly new horse owner and they have assured me that that is what happened sometimes

You have had her for 9 months and she has always stood perfectly.

A new farrier had her break her tie ring and she needed sedating, now she is lame.

Obviously pain is involved.

It is not clear if 'something' happened to cause an accident in the yard, such as breaking the ring, getting loose and injuring herself? Or, if she was in so much pain from being trimmed that she had to try to get loose?

Either way, I would get a vet to do a full examination.

It is not normal for a horse to have no issues, then be lame after trimming. In fact, with mine, trimming can correct all sorts of little gait abnormalities.

Also, I presume you have regularly had 2 other farriers, not that this is the third time she has been trimmed in 9 months? Regular trimming is kinder to feet and joints. Horses are not ideally set up for sudden great changes in the angles of the feet and locomotion.

This is not normal. I also recommend a vet visit asap to eliminate laminitis which she may need pain relief from. As someone else said either she broke loose and cause her to become lame or new farrier has taken too much off or she I'd suffering from laminitis and new farrier didn't notice ? I always used to attend my farrier appointments not because I didn't trust him just always have, I like to ask questions etc

Personally I would get the vet asap, pain relief may be required. You could wrap the feet with nappies/vetwrap to give some relief, and have a really deep bed. It happened to my friends pony,
