I have posted many times on here about the woes of my pure bred connies feet.

this being one of many!

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=373851

Have had several vets, two specialist farriers and my own farrier, tried every diet, supplement, wash, foot xrays etc in the book. I gave up searching for answers on the internet a while ago as nothing out there. He now has a shared though and yesterday she found this (all of which seems to have come to light in the last 8 mths!)

this is absolutely it.
On the one hand im relieved that I know what the problem is, on the other it seems there is no effective treatment :(
thought others might be interested.

How awful. :(

If the condition is caused by a simple recessive gene (which is the current hypothesis), this means it can only occur when two carrier ponies are bred to each other.
If pedigree analyses turn out to be correct, then carriers of the condition are likely to be extensive and widespread in the Connemara breed. To prevent further breeding of affected ponies, a genetic test is needed for screening breeding stock.

I really hope that a test is developed soon.

it has come up before with regards to whether bad feed have a genetic element, I think it was cptrayes who has mentioned it.

as faracat said hopefully a test can be developed to prevent further occurences.

eta reading the article, it is not a huge amount of money to be found research wise and as someone could then commercially offer the test to breeders I should think it very viable to do.

Hi
I am not sure whether you will be aware of the following information. If you already know then apologies.

"Breaking News - HWSS is Official

It is Official!!

Because of the close relationship between the HWSS Research Group and the Bannasch Laboratory, UC Davis, we have been aware for sometime of the progress that has been made, and now we can share this publicly.

The very existence of HWSS and that it is of genetic orign of it has been questioned by many people throughout the Connemara Pony breeding world. Those who have not seen or personally experienced the condition are reluctant to accept that such a serious problem could be lurking within their beloved breed. Understandably the recurring call has been the need for scientific proof that this is not simply an environmental or management issue, but a genetic one. Now because of the dedication of a number of breeders and individuals throughout the world, we have that proof! UC Davis has released the following..."

UC Davis are needing to recruit more ponies into the research project. This would be an opportunity for you to help.
The UK is one country which has been so quiet on the HWSS issue that the group has no representative there nor any ponies from the UK are enrolled in the study. It would be great if you were to become actively involved.

Contact the research group if you do want to submit a blood sample as import permits and other documentation is required to move biological samples across borders.
If you want more info feel free to contact us anyway.
