Good afternoon all!

As per title- today was Hopalong's first outing post-injury to actually attempt a dressage test. We warmed up for this on Friday with a trip to the beach where Hopalong caught me out by being really good and not spooking at the waves like previous outings, I got a little cocky and allowed myself to relax and enjoy trotting and cantering through them when suddenly spook... splash!!! :o

Sadly for you all, Mr FigJam was not in attendance so there is no photographic evidence. He is as upset about this as you all are! :p I can assure you that although the landing was as soft as... well, sea water and sand... it was also very soggy and sandy! Squelched round for the next hour and had to sit on a carrier bag on the way home!!!

So today I was up early to polish and plait in the hope that a shiny, smart pony would earn us a couple extra sympathy marks and it seemed to work. ;) I stitched in the plaits properly for the first time, took me ages longer, but I think it did look a bit smarter. We were attempting the dizzy heights of Prelim 1 at an unaffiliated competition locally.

I allowed about 25mins to warm up with the first 5mins just walking around on a long rein to loosen off and then 20mins proper work like a schooling session at home. I went straight in to our test without stopping for a proper break (eg to watch a test etc) and I think this seemed to work well for Hopalong as no opportunity to switch off.

She was nice and relaxed in the warm up, then got a little "looky" at judge's box, corner of the arena, coffee shop etc when we went over to work around the arena before our test. However, we had lots of time to do lots of circles, serpentines etc while waiting for the bell and she settled fine.

She then did a really nice feeling test, a little hollow in some of the transitions and tensed up at the end of the FWLR when I picked up the reins again (judge spoke to me afterwards and gave advice on how better to pick up the reins and maintain contact at the same time which was nice.), but on the whole, it felt pretty good and massively better than some of the tests I remember from last year!

I may have had a little blub when I came out of the arena... :o I was just so proud of how nice and relaxed she had stayed and how hard she had tried for me. To think that 6 months ago I had no idea what kind of work she could come back to etc, it was so nice to be out, doing summat and that it felt good. What kind of idiot cries just because they "survived" Prelim 1?!?

So, Mr FigJam was in attendance to provide (lots!) polos and take photos, here are some for your perusal and empire biscuits for those of you that suffer through all my blethering! ;)

Oh yes... almost forgot the minor detail of scoring 70.53% with 2 x 8s and pretty consistent 7s and ended up 4th out of over 20! :D :D :D (there were 26 entered in the unaff section but not sure how many W/D, no shows etc there were) Clever Hopalong doing matchy matchy with the frilly (green) to team colours (green and navy). :p

whooppee for Hopalong, the come-back queen :). You can't keep a good horse down you know - very well done both of you but boo to no pictures of the dunking :(.

Well done!! A sign of great thing to come surely! Lovely pics - another to voice disappointment at no evidence of said dunking :p

She looks amazing!!! Lol at the beach bit, she keeps you on your toes eh! It's wonderful you are both out and about again, I don't blame you for being so emotional I would have been the same :).
Blimin good mark as well!!!

Very well done :D. Looking very good :D

Thank you, it was feeling good today too which was very much a surprise! ;)

Thanks RF, I hope she keeps it up and isn't lulling me into a false sense of security as per the waves incident! ;) And Mr FigJam was just as disappointed to hear I'd provided entertainment on Friday and he wasn't there to capture the moment. :p

Oops, at least the dressage was drier than on the beach!! :D

Well done and lovely photos, love the one of Mr FJ with her :)

Ha, yes, was a much comfier journey home today compared with Friday! ;) Thank you. :) Hopalong lurves Mr FigJam as he only ever turns up at parties, provides polos and doesn't make her do any work!

well done!!! brilliant!! :)

Thank you. :)

Hmmm... my worry is that the only way is down from a PB of 70%?! ;) If I can keep some consistency around the mid-60% mark though that would be good I think? Need to work on the transitions as she still hollows and pokes her nose at these- so that's on the "to do" list, starting with RC training session on Friday night. :)

Fantastic well done!

Thanks. :)

Aw, thanks firewell, it's nice to hear others think she is looking well, I'm rather biased but think so too! :o ;) Can you imagine how emotional I'll be if/when we get back out competitively jumping again?!

:p

You both look fabulous! :D

Shame about the pre test dunking - ponies always like to show us up it seems.....

Congrats on the matching frilly too :D You could be hot cometition by the sound of it ;

Well done :D looks like she enjoyed her outing although I'm sure you can see her waiting for the jumps that follow the circles bit ;)
Every pony needs a person who just shows up to give them polos to be their favourite person.

Thank you, although I think we need to prove it wasn't a fluke before I get too carried away thinking I've unearthed a true dressage diva pony! ;)

WELL DONE :D:D:D
Time for the bling now ;)???

Naughty Q! No bling!!! :p (but thank you! :D )

wow she looks fantastic :)
very well done lovely to see her back in action and looking so well :)

Thank you, it's really nice having her back in action too! :) Huge thank you to everyone who gave themselves cramp crossing their fingers for the last 13 months, it's been worth the wait! :D

I know exactly what you mean about getting emotional! Must be so nice to have her back and competing :D

Thanks, as above to angelish, it is really nice getting to get back out and about with her again, I've missed it so much.

Well Done :D

Looking good and great score :)

Thank you, golden oldies rock! :D

Yes, I think she is definitely confused as to why there was no SJ and XC after! I hope she doesn't go back to giraffe McPokeynose style in protest next time?! ;)

Instead of bling, maybe a navy and bottle green velvet browband? She'll feel left out otherwise!! She looks brilliant- I think those are some of the best and most consistent photos you've posted of her :) I really missed her reports this year, so I'm really looking forwards to 2012 now :D

Hmmm, I'm not sure she'd suit a velvet browband? She's too cobby and not fine enough for that?! Think I'll stick to the plain tack and yellow sticker on hat harness/BE pin on jacket to explain any poor performances?! ;)

But thank you, it was definitely the most relaxed, soft and consistent she's felt in a test to date and was the most enjoyable to ride. If only I could get her to feel like that in a BE test... However I fear that being outdoors on grass, with tannoys going and jumps in the distance will soon ruin the softness! :p Fingers crossed she'll be able to get back out jumping properly next year and we can get some eventing reports written up again. :)

Well done! Fab score and nice pics - love the free walk one! I got a little upset at my first dressage test on Ronnie when he came back into work - must have been the only person crying at the end of a W+T test :D

Fingers crossed you've got much more to look forward to coming up!

I was at SNEC yesterday as well and noticed the yellow sticker on the hat harness, can I ask what it is?
Well done, I did notice the person with the very long lense on the camera (recognise your gloves from giving her a hug when you came out the arena) :)

Yay for Hopalong!!! What a fab score for her first outing back from injury, no wonder you were blubbing!! :D Well done!!

Thank you, I did feel very daft blubbing about it though! :o

Whoop, whoop, well done Hopalong :D

Think she is definately going to be a dressage diva, she may never want to get her toes dirty again! :D

Lal, she's never been a fan of mud, although I think she wouldn't care what the conditions were first time out?! ;)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one then! :) It's such a long wait when they're injured and you go through a phase of "will I ever ride them, let along compete them again" thoughts etc, that it was just such a high to be back out on her and have it go so well. :D

We have a RC lesson this week, trip to the beach again (hopefully staying dry this time...! :p ) at the weekend and then RC competition the following weekend where we'll do a couple of prelim tests (one long arena, eeek!). We had tentatively put our names down for the area novice DR teams qualifying competition in Nov, but was dependant on how she did this weekend, so will make that a firm application now! ;) Still feel nervous making plans with her though, keep worrying that I'm jinxing it all and she'll get injured again! :o

Hi! Were you riding at a similar time to us then? Will need to keep an eye out and say hi if you see us again, although there doesn't seem to be any unaff DR there that fits our schedule for a bit. :(

There was an official 'tog there with long lens, Mr FJ was only taking photos for me and had a black/red bodywarmer on. :) And lol at recognising my gloves, they are just cheapies that I had to buy for pure DR stuff, much prefer my black ones! ;)

PS- the yellow sticker is from BE stuff, you need to get your hat checked to make sure it meets safety standards and once this is done, they tag it with the yellow tape so stewards know it's fine and so you only need it checked once. My comment just meant that they'd see skull cap with BE tag and realise we are not pure dressage divas, so understand any poor performances where Hopalong may be more concerned with looking for jumps...! ;)

great piccies! you are not alone in crying after getting a horse back out again after injury - been there and done that. Even burst out laughing when he did his ridiculous spook at nothing when previously I would have felt like screaming!

Lovely smiley happy post!

I have already seen the photo's on facebook, but just thought I'd say it is great to see you two back out and looking better than ever!!! She looks to be going fantastic! Long may it continue!!

And well done on scoring an amazing % and the placing :D

Aw, nice to know I'm not alone! You do try appreciate the little things more, don't you? :)

70%!!!!! May be you should take a "dunking" more often?
Well done ! x

Ha ha, I'm not sure I can cope with a dip in the North Sea prior to every dressage test, maybe H felt guilty for it?! ;)

Sorry not checked my subscriptions in ages, was just curious about the yellow sticker on the hat as didn't know what it meant (eventing being a bit too scarey for my liking), I drove the lorry over that day and i think you were there at the same time as the younger rider, she was riding a big palamino (would have had a bling browband, they all do!!!), then we went back for the Novice with a big chestnut (again with the bling but his is really blingy!!!), the handy thing about being so close is that we can drive the lorry back home and swap the horses and given the times we were given it was just as well or we would have been there for 8 hours.
What about Kingsbarn they've got a 2 day show on in November, it says affiliated at the moment but they will most likely open it up to unaffiliated as well, was there yesterday and the unaffiliated sections were larger than the affiliated sections:):):)
