I cannot imagine the feelings of those horse owners in Florida - I just so hope all of them make it through.
I really feel for those who have had to evacuated and were unable to take livestock with them .I think they mark the postcode indelibly on them and then open all the gates etc to give them a fighting chance to get to safety.heartbreaking
One wonders if people have contingency plans in place for this sort of thing as well as for forest wild fires as it seems to be a more regular occurrence .Praying for them all
HiSort of. I live in an area in Colorado that is very high risk of fires (Evergreen). I have 3 horses now and a 2 horse trailer which isn't ideal but I do have lots of horsey friends close by.
My contingency plan if I'm in the state is obviously to load them up and remove them from the area and I have places I know I can take them. If I'm not there I have friends for back up. If there's any inkling of fires nearby I make sure my trailer is hitched up ready to go, such as this summer and a friend went and hitched it up for me. Had the fire come near she would have got her horse out (a few mins from mine) and her husband would have got mine.
Failing that, turn them loose, with number/zip code on their sides- I have a can of spray for that.
