Hopping in trot...

I am going to look at a new pony on Saturday to help out with and help the owner exercise and train. At the moment she has a bit of a problem apparently where she is 'hopping' in trot according to the owner. She has had her back checked and specialist said she has twisted it, prob in field, and to give her until weekend off work. She is going to come back for check. She says if she can't cure it through physio then it needs a vet and x-ray. This pony is only 7 and she is overweight. Any ideas what this could be and how long term?
 
Sorry but there is no way anyone is going to be able to give you any sort of useful advice or information based on what you have said. The owner needs to get further advice from her physio and vet. Obviously if the pony isn't right exercise and training are going to be irrelevant until it is fully recovered.
 
I am not sure how desperate you are for rides - but it is not worth wasting your time with horses like this! You always want to be looking for that horse who is going to get you to the next level, get you seen by more people, etc - this horse is only good if you want to becomea hot walker, and have an affair with the vet.
 
Dont know whether its the same sort of 'hop' but one of ours was doing that for a while. I wondered whether it was to do with him having 9 months off with laminitis, but trainer says he was just 'blagging' it. He wouldnt do it with trainer, but would with anyone else. Still havnt got to the bottom of it.
 
I think the pony should be looked at again if you dont see an improvement but it doesnt mean that it is a back problem. Like others have posted it could be due to another injury, horses dont, for the most part, fake lameness. There is discomfort for a reason.
 
My horse used to do this too, his was caused by EPSM. now he is on the high oil diet he is fine. It certainly sounds like you should avoid this one, especially as you have a choice
 
Follow up:
I rode her and the hop is very occasional - almost like an extra step every so often, and also it only happens on corners. Other than that she seems very well in herself and she is anything but reluctant - she is very keen.

The back person is coming again on Saturday for a further look.

GTs - thanks for your concern on my part but I have no desire whatsoever to get 'noticed'. Not in the horsey sphere anyway - perhaps in my career
