Hi,

Mad 17" 19yo ISH decided to pull his easyboot and gaiter off, then 2 mins later massive legs waving rear (NEVER done it before). Then hoppity hop on off-fore.

There is a strong pulse on the inside of the leg below the knee but other than that, no heat, swelling, tender spots.

??

Ideas

(He is a bit of a diva)

Most likely he has an abscess in the foot and the rear is a red herring. Big pulse by the tendon, hopping lame with nothing else to show for it is a shoe-in for an abscess. If you can't bear to leave it, call a farrier.

It really can come on that quick from nowhere, I had one do it in the middle of a 12 mile ride once!!

Good luck.

PS 17 inches is very small for an ISH :)

thanks guys, gonna keep him in and keep eyes on it, he is on full liv at my friends working yard so they can keep an eye on my monster :)

Hot poultice as well, and hot tubbing 3x daily would be useful as opposed to just keeping him in. If he is hopping lame as well, please call your vet/farrier out to relieve the pressure otherwise it's not really fair on him.

I'd go for abscess too, give the farrier a call tomorrow - always worth calling the farrier first imho, as vets just are not as good when it comes to feet :)

My sisters pony had an abscess two years ago in a hind foot, he was so lame we thought he must have broken his pelvis or something. Called the vet out on the sunday (much to his disgust, he missed the cricket :D ) he gave him penicillin, which it turns out the 23yo pony is allergic too - cue very sick pony. In the 14 years we'd had him, we'd had never known as he had never been ill!

I am useless at finding a pulse though!
