friend called me to help with there pony but im very lame-novice as touch wood mines never had a days lameness.

Pony lives out, came down from field today not putting any weight on back leg. By the time i got there he Was putting weight on it but after he shuffled forward (so i could see him in the light as theyd put him in a stable) he was reluctant to again when he walks on he is hopping behind as he really doesnt want to take weight on the leg at all, and then stood holding it up and resting on toe etc.
No cuts, obvious swelling etc and foot is clean as a whistle.

Whats best course of action? have got him in stable (no bedding as yet as never stabled but they are going to sort)

I very much doubt its a kick (his field buddy is very aged) there field is hilly and they do have a jaunt round so im wondering if he's gone a bit overboard and somethings happened.

If pony can't weight bear or is, at least, hopping lame, he needs a vet. Could be anything, from an abscess to a break. In the meantime, keep pony calm and quiet with a large bed with bankings in case he doesn't keep his balance. Vet will be able to get pain relief in him far quicker than anything oral.

Probably just a strain or something but if he is hoping lame he needs a vet today. Stable and cold hose until he gets there I would think.

aarrrgghh!! how frustrating! but at least you are reassured that it isn't anything dreadful.

mine has done a similar thing - took forever to stagger in from field with nothing detectable wrong and was completely sound next morning! couple of days later was lame again but this time more obviously an abscess.
