I can't tell you how angry and sad I am as I have just witnessed something that could almost be beyond words.
I now don't care who (if anyone knows me in person) gets to know this, as it must be stopped. I called the RSPCA.
At about 11am this morning, I saw a young boy (should have been at school) aged about 7 in a puppies 'play pen'. Saying its a play pen is an understatement as its just really a rabbit run. On the grass lawn of the neighbour, no blanket to lie on and no shelter from the sun or rain. Puppy is a terrier type and only about 8 weeks old - its tiny!!
So there was the boy 'playing' with pup. Yeah right!! He had it by the front paws and was TOSSING it up in the air - smack onto the ground. Grabbed it by the front paws again and SWUNG it around (like a daddy would do to a child in a circle - you know what I mean?) The boy then let go of it - so SMACK into the ground again. THEN he picked it up by the front legs again and FLIPPED it over backwards. Puppy was still and quiet after that.
I shouted from the upstairs window to stop the boy doing anything more, but he just put his hands over his ears.
Now, the owner is different to you and I. This child isn't his (he doesn't like children). He treats all his animals with little respect and throws them a joint of meat every other day. When he has had enough of his dogs he will either shoot them or 'take them to the New Forest' -we have to use our imagination on this one!
Trouble is, the owner is also our landlords son, and if word gets out that we reported it - or if we confront him - he will either laugh, ignore us or possibly threaten us with eviction. BUT, eviction or not - cruelty is not tollerated, particually when my children see it, so I took the chance and reported it - rightly or wrongly.
I just can't get over what I saw, its haunting. I know 'they' have done some other 'cruel' acts towards their animals, but this is the cake topping.

Did I do the right thing? What would you do?

You did absolutely the right thing, and well done for reporting it even though it is such a tricky situation. The RSPCA don't say who has made a report so at worst your neighbour can only suspect you did it, and without proof I do not see how he can possibly have grounds to evict you. I just hope the RSPCA do something for once, poor little pup.

Well done for reporting it, wish more people were brave enough to such a thing. And IF you see this or anything like this again film it. Easy on a mobile phone. Faultless evidence and the police or RSPCA do not have to declare who gave it to them. Also if the RSPCA fail to act you have something to expose them to the media with.

I wish I had filmed it. My mobile was in the pocket of my waist coat as I had just been for ride - and that was on the saddle downstairs!
This all happened within a very short time, and I was so cross, I shouted at him to stop before I got the phone! - Lesson Learnt.

Lord, did you go over and get the puppy???

As much as I wanted to, it was an impossible situation. I would have had to go through their kennels to get pup (thats a nasty experience) or climb the 6 ft fence with live electric wire on the top (thats a painful experience) or gone through the bottom garden and get mauled by the 'nasty' terrier! I didn't fancy my options - and I didn't want to be got for tresspassing!!

You did the right thing, now just be prepared to nag and nag and nag to find out what they have done about it. To be honest I wouldnt care if the lord of hell was his father/land lord/godfather - they would have been reported and I'd be screaming blue bloody murder.

You certainly did the right thing. Only hope they act upon it. Definitely try and get video footage next time (fingers crossed there isn't a next time).

I would be knocking on the door and offering them some money for their little puppy, whom I had fallen madly in love with;)

Grrr! That has made me livid, I would have been on the phone to the cops as well.

I won't print what first action sprang into my mind if that were me, but it would involve me ending up in a police cell.....

Brings me to the point - when/how often do I chase the findings from the RSPCA? afaik nothing happened today - well, I haven't seen anybody from RSPCA but I also haven't seen the pup.

Would the cops do anything? I get the impression animal cruelty isn't the top of their lists to solve?

Yes, they should be bothered about animal cruelty, it is an offence, it is brought to court often enough.
Kid should have been in school.
Kid will probably end up being a sadistic, violent adult if that is the way he treats baby animals at this age.

My first thought on reading your post was how sorry I felt for the child as well as the puppy - at the age of 7, what sort of upbringing has he had to have absolutely no empathy with an animal? (of course I was upset for the pup too). If I had seen one of my own children do something like that I would be horrified - not just at the blatant cruelty - but of their mental state of mind.

Your neighbours sound ghastly and well done for reporting them - maybe an official in a uniform poking around might make them sit up and think a bit.

Ditto Ravenwood!! That a child feels this is perfectly acceptable behaviour is just horrific :-( Whatever happened to good old fashioned values of humanity, decency, integrity and respect for other living beings - its a mark of the dog-eat-dog society that we live in today.

And RuthnMeg what a sickening situation - poor puppy and I really feel for you re the tenancy situation too. Well done you for reporting it though. Lets hope the RSPCA do something - although, depressingly (and distressingly), it will probably fall under their 'food, water, shelter' not 'actually' being mistreated 'we're too busy fundraising for some campaign and putting down our animals to care about what we were actually formed for in the first place'.

Its just a shame the sytems aren't in place to back up your courage in reporting this, given your situation. That's not to say that you shouldn't - its just to say that principles are easy to have but harder to stand by if the going gets tough and well done to you for sticking by them - too many people would have turned the other cheek.

Hope it works out ok

I would just keep ringing up the RSPCA centre you reported them to - and keep on ringing and asking for updates. Let us know if you hear anything.

WELL
Something DID happen later yesterday. Not only did a RSPCA officer come but he brought 2 police officers too - turns out I am not the only person who reported it.
Actually, my OH reported an incident (I had no idea, he told my this morning!) - it was a seperate incident regarding the lurcher - who was seen covered in blood after a deer hunt (so I've been told) and then was lame and injured due to barbed wire. The dog warden has visited too.
BUT, guess what, on both occassions no-one was home, so I am hoping they will return soon and something will be done. (I personally thought that with police presence they could break in and take dogs and pup, but apparently not?!?)
And on the good news - I have seen the Pup and ''it'' seems ok.
Will keep you posted when I know more.

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You definitely did the right thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm lost for words, I'm so horrified!!!!!!!!
