Hormonal Gelding

My gelding is normally extremely chilled to handle and ride. However, every now and again he gets hormonal and 'riggy'. He gets upset when he is separated from mares, calls out and gets very protective. He is also on alert all the time. It usually happens when mares are coming into season and settles after a few days.

I have had his levels tested and he's fine and I usually slip some Agnus Castus in his feed to settle him.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Also, I would have thought February is a bit early for mares to come into season.

not geldings but have 2 x stallions.

one is extremely laid back, never fussed with any other horses and stables/travels next to mares without fuss.

the other one is more hormonal and if he was stabled/turned out near mares would be a stressy wreck. He is very settled in a bachelor situation next to my other stallion (they do both cover mares but off site so no confusion with home V work V covering)
Feb might be too early for them to cycle but they still smell like ladies!

can you separate him from them, stable and turn out only next to geldings? realistically you will struggle if you cant IMO.

My TB (now dearly departed bless him) used to get riggy in spring & summer. Had his levels tested he wasn't a rig. Global Herbs Rig Calm was a god send & worked really fast. I got better over the years at predicting when to start him on it. He didn't need it all the time. Maybe worth a try? Xx
