does any one know of any good supplements for a hormonal mare is frisky mare any gd? Also which supplement is better for calming a horse down feedmarks steady up or super solvitax and where cud i buy solvitax from? many thanks for replies in advance xxxx

NAF's Oestress is good - I use it and so do many of my mare owning friends! Also have used NAF Magic that was fairly effective as a calmer. Friend of mine swears by it too for her mare and she had tried loads of other calmers before finding the results with Magic. I have just started Nupafeed calmer however as found the Magic seemed to be wearing off a bit. It's early days yet - my mare's only been on it 10 days but so far so good!

The active ingredient in any Hormone related product is Agnus Castus, you can buy this straight from either Equus Health or even Holland & Barratt.

The active ingredient in 'most' calmers is Magnesium, again you can buy this direct from H & B or you can buy CalMag from a good agricultural store.

The other ingredients for general calmers are Valerian Hops, Camomile and various other herbs picked for their calming influences, the problem with calmers are that what works for one horse may not have any effect at all on others but the Solvitax one hasn't many reviews probably due to the fact that it is oil based and on many occasions, oil = energy so not the best additive for a calmer....

I use Hilton Herbs, Equilibrium with great effect for my moody mare..........she is much better since being on this but my vet will be putting a marble in next year as she can still be a bit of a pain!!!!

I use Stroppy mare and her season last week was not too bad at all. I also use steady up as a calmer and so far so good but it is quite expensive at £36 a tub. I might try a new one by equine america called magnitude - its about £16 for over 100 days supply!

Can recommend the marble treatment - not personally

but seem to be taking the edge off my mare- so far. Vet keeps ringing for regular updates, so am wondering how long it lasts!

Magnesium from H&B is just the tablets, most will eat them mixed in feed as they don't have a taste, it's more the texture that they aren't keen on as when wet, they are a bit like chalk.

Rough guide is 2 tabs per 100kg per day.
