Hormonal? Or trying it on?

I've had my mare for 3 months now, she's been in work with me for 8 weeks after being turned away for the winter (My gran died unexpectedly 2 days after she arrived so I was slow off the mark to get her going).

She's rising 6 but very green, not done much. The first few days of riding she was a bit nappy/spooky but we've come so far in 8 weeks already. Have been doing loads of hacking out with friends and can now go to 'collect' my hacking buddy and do the last bit of our hack all by ourselves too. So been feeling really happy with her!

3 weeks ago she behaved very oddly 2 days running out hacking - twitching around her back end/flanks which went on to whole body twitching, full body shakes and eventually kicking her tummy and bucking. I thought maybe she'd been bitten by something?

Since then we've had a successful 3 weeks - been doing lots of going in front on the hacks, introduced cantering, done a wee baby dressage and got a frilly :-) and also taken part in a mini dressage training session. The only slight niggle has been her reluctance to accept a contact by throwing her head around a bit when schooling / doing the wee dressage things. Have just been ignoring it and riding her forwards. Teeth were done on Tues of this week and she did have some sharp edges.

So now this weekend, exactly 3 weeks on from the last lot of strange behaviour, it has started again. She was a total madam in my lesson yesterday - spooking, not wanting to go forwards. My instructor was great and gave me a kick up the bum and we did get over the spooking and got her going forwards but she would NOT accept the contact and was continually chucking her head. To begin with instructor was convinced it was temper tantrum but by the end of the lesson was thinking I should get her checked out in case something is bothering her. She also said don't back off her in case she is taking the piss and we'd see what the vet says when I ring her on Mon.

So then today tried taking her out a hack with my field buddys. Started off great, then within 15 mins the twitching in the hindquarters started. My friend was riding behind me so could see what was happening - she was twitching all the hind quarter / flank muscles and 'itching' her lady bits with her tail. There would then be a big squirt of clear, watery discharge and she was kicking and bucking when it was running down her legs. She would then relax and be ok again for 5/10 mins then the whole thing would begin again. After the 5th outburst, once she was calm I got off and lead the rest of the hack as I really felt she was not being naughty and that she was genuinely in discomfort. (I didn't take this decision lightly, I'm usually a 'kick on and get on with it' type!)

So any thoughts? Hormonal? Taking the p*ss? Will be ringing the vet on Mon morning but some reassurance I'm not a complete idiot would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance x

Def hormonal, you have described my hormonal tart to a t :D!
with hunni its ALL THROUGH summer but then again, she has an enlarged follicle which is causing her some discomfort!, I'd deffo get vet out and get her ovaries scanned!

Sounds like she's in heat. I would take it easy with her, do some in hand work as riding may be irritating her already sore ovaries. Keep a diary so you can begin to predict her cycle and if she seems really unhappy or becomes unmanageable there are a ton of supplements out there which can help.

Mine sometimes goes like that when we pass a field that contains a gelding she has a thing for. She goes all quivery and nappy and eventually squirts.....once she's done it I push her on and she goes forwards and is fine. Mine only does it when in season rest of the time she passes him fine. Could be hormonal definitely but would chat to vet to be certain.

Sounds hormonal to me too!! My mare you can't tell the difference whether she is in season or not so dont know much about hormonal mares but I'm sure there is some kind of supplement you could put her on to make her more comfortable when she is in season

Thanks guys, I'm trying to get some work done tonight but have been worried about it since I got back from the stables! Good to know it's not completely unheard of behaviour in a mare, my previous 2 mares I could never tell if they were in season or not and last horse was a gelding...

Hunni, does your mare get any medication / treatment for the enlarged follicle?

I'll be going down the vet route and get her ovaries scanned if need be, would insurance cover this and treatment such as Regumate or the Marble if that was what was necessary? I'm sure I read somewhere that insurance wont cover things to do with breeding so am worried 'girls problems' might fall in to that category!

does sound a bit hormonal but also a bit stroppy. before you go down th e vet route why dont you try some supplements like "stropy mare" or oestress or similar. you really dont want an exclusion of lady bits when you own a mare initialy. work her well, dont accept sloppy or stroppy she may well come through this once the weather and temps settle down a bit. good luck, and put her in her place as req!

Well, tried stroppy mare that didn't work, tried oestress only calmed down her squirting then stopped ! , tried marble and she is back in season, and now on 3 scoops of chasteberry and touch wood she has been happy so far! She is having depo shot though the poor thing :) I recommend the chasteberry!

if you have had a marble put in her and she has squirted it out already i would be getting your vet to put another one in FOC!!

My mare is exactly the same such a witch, I got the vet out to check her over, she is now on regumate which is basically hormones to balance her out, she's ok now but what is bizarre is that she's always been moody when she's in season but not to those extremes!

I do a lot of competition work with her so an hormonal mare that won't go forward is not the best, not sure what to do next to be honest :-(

Vet has been out today and scanned my mare. Her ovaries are very inflamed and she has 6 enlarged follicles - 2 on the left ovary and 4 on the right. Vet has given me regumate for her so fingers crossed it does the trick! I had planned to get her out and about lots this summer so hopefully that is still on the cards.

Thank you all for your replies and I'll keep you posted :-) xx
