Really horrible. Completely beyond me how that could be seen as anything other then horrific cruelty.

But I do think the Daily Mail are doing so well bringing all these equine issues about. So thumbs up for them. The picture of the 'new frosted pony' which was also in today's paper was also lovely.
 
Im so shocked and angry, I never knew this existed.

The article asks people to write to the embassy in London to say that they wont be visiting the Philipines if this 'sport' is allowed to continue. It says that the threat to their biggest industy which is tourism may help towards getting it eliminated.
 
I don't trust news papers to tell the truth but the camera does not lie. Those SICK B******S B******S B******S B******S B******S B******S B******S B******S NEED TO BE SHOT CLEAN BETWEEN THEIR UGLY P**Y B******D EYES.

It is horrendous, just as dancing bears and lions riding horses are horrendous. But in a country with so little money as the Philippines, people have to do what they can to make a living. The horse that dies is eaten, in much the same was as the losing bull at a Spanish bullfight. I deplore any animal cruelty, and that includes the way pigs are treated in intensive meat production crates on the continent. You do not have to travel to the other side of the world to witness unspeakable animal cruelty, and at least for these horses the agony is over in a matter of minutes, not dragging on for months or years. It always makes me wince when the DM gets involved in animal cruelty abroad without setting things in the context in which they are happening, although in fairness they do cover a lot of cruelty in farming cases.
 
I for one will never be visiting these islands and I'll do my best to ensure that anything I buy hasn't come from there either until they quit this torture.
 
Easier said than done! (The buying, not the visiting.) A bit like China; their goods are all but unavoidable as not everything is labelled with a country of origin. It could be looked at that by helping the floundering economies of these countries, they will become prosperous and not need to resort to torturing animals in order to raise money.

I'm sorry but there is no excuse to allow people to torture defenseless animals in order to make a living. Those B*******S should find a decent way to earn their living. Ok, so they need to eat - why not just put the poor animal out of its misery and then eat it? instead of torturing it to death.

And bull fighting is just as evil. They are LOW LIFE COWARDS. SCUMBAG B******S

I am not condoning animal cruelty, merely commenting that in this case, the act of cruelty is short, and the dead animal is eaten, not just killed for the hell of it. Many animals who spend their miserable lives in meat production suffer all day, every day. We need to look at our own treatment of animals before we criticise what happens abroad, or certainly do both at the same time. Are bears still being milked for their bile in an agonising procedure? Are dogs still being skinned/boiled alive? There and thousands of examples of animal cruelty cited every day throughout the world, and we are as guilty as many other countries. Still, at least the foxes are safe now.

Ok, but my personal opinion still stands.

I totally agree that we are as guilty but I still don't have to like what I have seen.


Our goverment is crap when dealing with animal welfare as it is with most things.
 
i am not shocked by wat i have just seen but i am disgusted but sooty is right in saying that it happens all over the world every day some worse than others and i personally think it will never all stop as too many sickos born into the world.
 
thanks for the link, I actually read this in the paper yesterday and it made me physically sick and I had nightmares last night - I know I shouldn't have read it but I did. I've written to the town mayor whether it will help, but hopefully if enough people do it might.
 
Sooty, yes the foxes are safe - well from packs of hounds - but sadly not from poor marksmen and other forms of pest control.

There are issues other than hunting that should have been further up this Government's priority list on "animal welfare". In fact they have made asses of themselves by making out the banning of hunting was a welfare issue at all. It was a class issue, no doubt about it. But if animal welfare was truly on their agenda, then surely day old calves transported for slaughter should have been on the list....... (amongst many other revolting practices that are allowed to continue for the sake of trade!)
 
Off topic but you brought it up, fox-hunting will return in its original form. It does not even compare to this display of barbarity. Stallion fighting is cruel and pointless. Fox control is necessary countryside management. That is one ill judged ban that will be overturned.

I totally agree. I have a friend who is an civil engineer, and he worked in the Philippines for several years. His wife went and joined him, and from what I can gather the level of poverty there has to be seen to be believed. It is so easy for us to sit and judge, but when you literally don't have enough food, and cannot feed your children, or educate them, life is desperate. The country is full of stunningly beautiful young women whose only income is from prostitution or marriage to a Westerner. Very sad, and I am sure if they could use the stallions to breed lovely horses for people to buy and ride for a hobby, they would.
 
It is a very disturbed country though. A very good friend of mine also lives out there and some of the tales are worrying, to say the least. She lives behind huge tall electric fences, has an armoured vehicle and cannot leave any of her children unattended at any time, not even with their amas. Amongst other things, European children are under threat of being stolen over there apparently.

I think you´re missing the point. For a start animals in 3rd world countries are seldom kept as pets. They have to earn a living. Also, they aren´t seen the way we see them; as feeling, thinking creatures, just as a means to an end and a way of making a living. They simply don´t see it as torture. It´s tragic and sad, and I wish it wasn´t so, but I´ve seen it here in Argentina (which I dare say is rather more advanced than the Phillipines) The poor are very, VERY poor (again, something I´ve seen here) and uneducated, and many can´t read. What ´decent´ work do you suggest they do? Gardening, cleaning? There just isn´t that much work for them and there are hardly any benefits to keep them afloat. It really is a dreadful situation they´re in, and very hard to comprehend if you live somewhere like the UK.

Because they make a better living from the fights. Simple really.
 
Oh yes, I think it is quite lawless and there is a lot of corruption. Very sad for people who just want to get on with living their lives and raising their families.My friends got very attached to their maid, and to this day (over 20 years later) they still send a small bit of money each month which has put her son through university. It is amazing the difference a tiny contribution can make, especially if it goes straight to the source.
