I hate how the horses look at this time of year - their coats are changing and they look dull and moth eaten. I am also covered in hair and dust from hours of grooming! When he's been attacked with the rubber curry comb and bathed (its still fly sheet weather here - lovely and sunny) he's all lovely and shiney, but give it 24 hours and he's all dull and scurfy.

Anything I can give him to help? I was thinking of adding equijewel in early to his feed as he normally has it in winter to help keep the weight on. Someone else has suggested redcell or similar - but how will that help?

Oil of some sort. I use soya but there are plenty of 'horse' ones out there. Good for coat and skin condition and energy/weight - also good for your pocket

I also use a slosh of cider vinegar for joints but some people say it's good for coats too. My two are particularly shiny at the moment, even with their winter coats coming through.

I was having this problem and was greatly envying the shiney, shiney coats of some of my fellow livery people.

Then my YO recomended feeding grass nuts - not for shiney coats, in fact I can't even remember why, which is a bit sad, but he likes them and he's having them and he's now remarkably shiney.

I have since found that all the other shiney horses I envied so much are also on grass nuts.

Pop some oil in his feed. Regardless of the time of year, no horse should be scurfy. And the oil will help his skin and coat.
