My horse has really dry horrible scuddy skin along the line of his mane where it is all flaky and dry. He lives out so hasn't been shampooed since September but now the weather is warming up I could give him a bath. Any suggestions about what shampoo or potion or even food supplement I could give to help? He isn't itchy with it, it's just not cosmetically very nice!

what does linseed actually do? Is it high in sugar as have natives so have to be careful of lami. Also is there a difference between linseed oil and micronised linseed?

miconised is better absorbed by the body ( if i remember rightly), cheap to feed ( half a mug daily) and does wonders for coat and hooves, it is fine to feed natives, prone to lami/cushings/ems..changed my horses coat/mane, very similar to yours..:)

Mircronised linseed is high oil and high protein, zero (or very nearly) sugar in it. The oil helps to keep the skin in good condition, and the protein helps with hair, skin and muscle growth and repair. Most horses will eat it without problems as it has a biscuit like smell to it and disappears when mixed into a damp feed.

Linseed oil just provides energy and goes towards skin condition. But you have to be careful not to feed it in too great a quantity as it can just go straight through them. Also, some makes have a petrol like smell to them as the oil has been chemically extracted not pressed out of the seeds.

Echo linseed but if you want a decent shampoo try nizoral (anti dandruff shampoo from boots etc). Its brilliant for itchy horses / mud fever, and rather than shampoo horse if you just dilute some in a spray bottle and spritz it on / rub in, you dont need to wash off. : )
